Over the years we've had numerous questions in regard to caring for old quilts. Today we'll discuss the number one question that we get ~ "How to wash an old or vintage quilt?" ~
If you have a vintage/antique quilt, we encourage you to hand wash verses machine wash to preserve your quilt and ensure a longer life. Also, prior to washing is a good time to inspect your quilt for any loose threads or areas needing repairs. Remember~ a stitch in time saves nine!
You will need some sort of a big tub or possibly if you have a bathtub that will work too. Fill the tub with cold water and gentle detergent with no bleach or strong stain removers that are built in. Completely submerge your quilt under the water. It is best to use your hands if at all possible. By using your hands to submerge and agitate you will have more control over the pull and tug of the fabric. Agitate by hand gently for about 10 minutes. The final step is to rinse thoroughly. You'll want to be sure and remove the soap - this step will most likely take the longest. Rinse until the water is clear. Be sure not to wring the quilt, but gently squeeze the excess water. Then air dry ~everyone has a different idea about this, but the heat of the dryer is really harsh on old/delicate quilts. Keep the quilt out of direct sunlight while drying and flip from side to side until dry. If the quilt will be going into storage~ check that it's completely dry. Keep in mind that these are methods that we have used with success, however we can't guarantee your outcome by using this method. *If anyone has any tips, they'd like to share~ please feel free to add them to the comment area. *
