🎉🎉150 years ago today, Congress officially authorized the National Fish Hatchery System! Created to help raise fish for food, today 70 operating hatcheries are committed to improving recreational fishing, recovering and restoring federally listed endangered species, and fulfilling tribal partnerships and trust responsibilities. As part of the nation's first conservation program, we are proud to celebrate 150 years of fish history! 🐟
D.C. Booth Historic NFH is 126 years old this year and houses the National Fish and Aquatic Conservation Archives - which has a lot of historical items from National Fish Hatcheries from all 50 states!

“What...is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?” -Bridge Keeper, Monty Python
Cliff swallows have been recorded reaching speeds of nearly 35 miles per hour! They average 4 flaps per second. When they aren’t speeding around you may see them on the ground sunbathing.

Did you know?: the Erwin Fish Hatchery produces more trout eggs than any other federal hatchery in the U.S.! Established in 1897, the hatchery has been an incredible asset to East Tennessee and our nation for over 100 years.

Have been asked several questions about this since we posted it. According to GADNR regulations, the free fishing day just pertains to Georgia residents. All out of state anglers are required to have the appropriate licenses to fish. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

This sweet pup walked onto the hatchery today. She didn’t have a collar, so no name or number to call. If you know who she belongs to or if you’re missing her please come by the hatchery and pick her up.

These two were found on Rock creek road at the hatchery Friday night. If they belong to you or you know who they belong to, then give the hatchery a call at 706-838-4723.
