For some learners, specific words or phrases may be connected to past experiences, denied access, or transitions. This is why knowing a client’s triggers and staying mindful of language during session matters.

Mary E. McDonald, PhD, BCBA-D, LBA, with Hofstra University/Eden II Genesis Programs, writes that trigger words can sometimes act as real antecedents for problem behavior in ABA.
