It was an absolute honor getting to speak yesterday at Mounts Botanical Garden of Palm Beach County on behalf of Palm Beach County Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and educate on how to properly plant and maintain NATIVE ground cover. Meeting so many people last night was so refreshing to see, it shines the light on how many people really care about helping native Florida and restoring habitat and wildlife here.

SWIPE FOR LIFE!!!!! This project had a boatload of contractors in the mix. And it was a blessing to be apart of the “fun”!

LIFE, gorgeous thoughtful and PROPER design and plant knowledge, salt tolerant, erosion control, native, color, edible and tropical…. This project is simply a dream come true in our eyes. This is about one year post install, and keep in mind this property bore the despair of the record breaking freeze this past December and SO much rain, however with our knowledge, proper pruning methods and caring for this property as if it were our own, we still came out on top!

Believe it or not- we’re confident that in a few more months after our plants adapt to their corrective pruning we concluded this week, it will look even BETTER than it is now!

I hope you enjoy this before and after. It’s a blessing and an HONOR to restore native Florida one garden at a time!

I'm Cam Maletto, a landscape designer and plant scientist in Stuart, Florida, and I build native, edible, and tropical landscapes across the Treasure Coast.

My background, so you know who's telling you what to plant. B.S. in plant science from the University of Florida, A.A. in horticulture from Palm Beach State College, trained under an ISA certified arborist, Florida-Friendly landscaping standards, and 14 years growing things in this state. Landscape designer, plant scientist, native plant specialist.

What that buys you is this. When a plant is struggling I can usually tell you why instead of guessing, and I'll tell you straight when something isn't going to work in your spot. Most of my work comes from people calling me back for the next project, which is the only proof I trust.

Longleaf Design does three things and they all fit together.

Native landscapes, built from the plants that grew here before the bulldozers did. They feed the insects, the insects feed the birds, and the yard becomes something alive instead of something you look at.

Edible landscapes. Fruit trees, food gardens, food forests. Mango, avocado, lychee, jaboticaba, and plenty most people don't know grow here. Designed to look like a landscape and not a farm, so you get curb appeal and you get to eat off it.

Tropical gardens, the lush look people move to Florida for, done without the invasive plants that escape into the preserves.

I design them, my crew installs them, and we care for them organically after. No broadcast spraying synthetic pesticides. A planting with enough diversity handles most of its own pest pressure. When something does need a response I go after that one thing instead of spraying the whole yard and killing the good bugs with the bad.

Most yards around here are planted with things that fight our climate and feed nothing. Mine are planted with things that want to be here.

HAPPY 33rd BIRTHDAY TO OUR FOUNDER, CAM!!!! (He’s going to hate me for this, lol!) I couldn’t resist- happy birthday to the hardest working person I know, and anyone who has seen him in action- will testify!!
