Happy 2024! I have finally put together a website to serve as a portfolio and “menu” for custom collars, since many of you have asked and it’s easier than navigating Etsy listings. (On the free Wix plan for now… don’t judge!)

I have also now provided some instructions on how to order directly from me (at a special direct rate!) — I don’t have an online storefront independent of Etsy just yet, but hopefully this is straightforward enough.

What is Latigo? Latigo style tannage produces a naturally waxy, lightly oily leather that is weather-resistant and resists excessive stretching even with a determined puller. This leather is both heavy-duty and with a luxurious, supple feel (yes, you can have both!).

The edges have been beveled (rounded-off) and burnished on all corners, so no need to break in a stiff leather leash that will slice up your hands!

Trainers and dog walkers alike will appreciate the thin (0.5") width for ease of handling that still offers great strength.

What’s in a name? (i.e. What the heck does Mackerras mean?)

Mackerras Hollow is the name of the small residential farm that my husband and I are fortunate enough to call home.

In coming up with the name, we wanted something that reflected “us”. As some of you may or may not know, by trade we’re both professional scientists in the field of parasitology. Eventually we settled on the name “Mackerras” for this place in honor of the late Drs. Ian and Josephine Mackerras – a highly influential husband and wife pair who contributed greatly to parasitology and zoology throughout the early and mid 20th century. We both refer to their works in our investigations even today. Seeing as though the Drs. Mackerras were Australian, we thought this was even more fitting as my husband is an Australian expat.

Probably the most prominent Mackerras contribution to science was the detailed experimental work that solved the convoluted life cycle of an important and dangerous zoonotic nematode – the rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis). This slim card holder features an infective stage rat lungworm larva, one of many parasites that we have encountered and worked with in our professional careers.
