As we anticipate a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, will we also see power revert from employees to employers? Our colleagues at Wilmington Trust explore the forces at play in the labor market in Theme I of this year’s 2023 Capital Markets Forecast.

: The CD is back in fashion.
A Certificate of Deposit (CD) is intended to hold a fixed amount of money for a specified period of time. While these accounts usually offer higher interest rates than traditional savings accounts, your money is not as accessible because it must remain in the account for the fixed period. Withdrawing funds from a CD before this period ends may result in an early withdrawal fee.
CDs can help you build a discipline for saving and a confidence knowing you’re starting a long-term savings plan for what matters most. Compare different savings options to see if CDs are right for you: https://mtb.everfi-next.net/student/dashboard/mtb/mtb-banking-for-young-adults/1567?locale=en -savings/compare-savings-options/page-1

The Bridgeport Multicultural Small Business Innovation Lab has concluded, and it was an astounding success! Local entrepreneurs that applied and were accepted into the program gathered weekly at the University of Bridgeport for a collaborative eight-week program to learn how to achieve financial empowerment by creating business plans, pitching to investors, and becoming strong, long-lasting economic players.
Kimberly Rose is an Admissions Advisor at the University of Bridgeport and CEO of Caven Denise Rose, a domestic, nanny, and “manny” matching service specializing in helping families with children who have special needs. After the program, Kimberly’s small business was announced as the fourth-place winner in the pitch competition, landing her business a $2,000 grant.
“Some families need more than just a regular babysitter, especially those with children with special needs. It truly takes a village. There was a moment after I lost my mother as a young adult when I needed to be cared for. It was a time when I was not myself, and I needed a village to be cared for in a different kind of way, to lift me up and bring me back to a place of comfort. And I was fortunate to have that village there for me, and it has inspired me to provide the same for others.”
Congratulations to Kimberly and all the small businesses who participated!

‘Tis the season of giving! Our 37th annual Gift of Warmth drive is underway in Western New York, collecting winter weather gear for local families in need.
Now through January 6, you can drop off new coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and mittens donations at 60 M&T branches across the region. Through our partnership with The Salvation Army of Buffalo, NY, all donated items will be distributed to our neighbors – just in time for Western New York’s chilly winter months.

Virgilio Rosario, president of Rosario Resource Group LLC, was announced as the third-place winner in the pitch competition, landing his business a $3,000 grant.
“It’s important for me to do the work that I do because there are many men like me who don’t get the opportunity to do it because of social constraints. The reason why I do it is to open the doors for those who come after me.” – Virgilio Rosario

After the program, Malcolm Wilson, founder and Executive Director of Level Up Community Gym, was announced as the second-place winner in the pitch competition, landing his business a $4,000 grant.
“It’s important to do what I do because this can spark real change for people – physically, emotionally, mentally, and even generationally. As parents, if you are physically fit, you will show your kids what to do. You’re going to inspire your family members and inspire your friends. And that’s our goal. If we can change one person’s life, that one can turn into 10, and that ten can turn into 100. That’s our mission.” – Malcolm Wilson

During the Small Business Administration (SBA)’s 2022 fiscal year, M&T was named the sixth largest lender in the country, providing 1,440 7(a) loans to help local small businesses pursue plans to expand and thrive.* And behind each of our SBA loans lies a story of an entrepreneur who is determined to build a business that helps customers, provides jobs and strengthens their neighborhood.
M&T customers, Dr. Uzo Ihenko and Kelechi Chillis-Ihenko, are making an impact in their Buffalo community by pursuing a redevelopment project on Broadway between Michigan and Jefferson Avenues. “Through our experience with M&T Bank, we’ve seen how much they care about people and helping local businesses grow.
