Family caregivers: Remember to take care of yourself too! It's easy to get caught up in the daily responsibilities of caring for a loved one, but it's important to prioritize your own well-being as well. Set aside some time each day for self-care activities, whether it's reading a book, going for a walk, or simply taking a few minutes to relax. And don't be afraid to ask for help from friends and family when you need it. Caring for someone else is a team effort and we all need a little extra support sometimes.

Offering a small gesture of support or kindness, like a smile, can be just as important as doing more significant things for them. Being present, but not overbearing, is the best way to be a help to someone.

Family caregivers, the weekend is almost here! It's time to put your cares aside and enjoy some much-deserved relaxation and fun. Whether it's a quiet walk in the park, a movie night with friends, or a day trip to a nearby town, take the time to do something for yourself.
Remember, taking a break and having some fun is not only good for your mental and physical health, but it will also make you a better caregiver. So take a deep breath, let go of the stress and enjoy your weekend! You deserve it!

When it gets cold outside, it's important for seniors to keep warm. Here are some cold weather tips for seniors this winter:
1. Watch for signs of hypothermia: Be aware of the signs of hypothermia, such as shivering, confusion, and fatigue, and seek medical attention if you suspect you or someone you know has hypothermia.
3. Keep your head and hands covered: Heat is lost quickly through the head and hands, so it's important to wear a warm hat and gloves to keep these areas protected.

The collective mission for humanity is to understand and help others and to act with empathy, kindness and generosity towards all living beings. Compassion is a universal value that should be embraced and practiced by all humans, regardless of their differences, in order to create a better world for all.

As a family caregiver, you are most likely incredibly busy and have a packed schedule. This can make it a challenge to take breaks. However, small breaks can make a huge difference. They help you recharge, rejuvenate, find a fresh perspective, and be able to manage the many other tasks on your to-do list. Try scheduling short breaks into your day.

"The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important."
~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Exercise may not just help seniors physically – some experts believe it can also help with cognitive issues.

While the media focus on the typical goals to lose weight, eat right and stop smoking, how about setting a goal to find a healthy balance between self-care and care for a loved one? There are a number of tools to help caregivers better manage and even lighten the load. Here are three important ones:

January is National Bath Safety Month, a time to remind us to protect those we love. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports an alarming stat: drowning remains a leading cause of death — infants and adults older than 85 are most likely to drown in a bathtub.
Install a couple of safety handles in the bath and near the toilet to prevent slips and falls and to assist those who need it from entering and exiting the tub or shower. They're also a good idea for helping those who have difficulty standing up from the toilet.

“We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come.”
— Joseph Campbell

Every family caregiver needs to be able to step away once in a while. You deserve to find respite from your responsibilities, whether it’s finally taking that vacation you’ve been planning or going for a short walk in the evenings. What you do with that time is yours to decide, just as long as you give yourself some distance from your caregiving responsibilities.

Start this new year off with a safe home for yourself and your loved ones by doing a home safety check today. The NFPA recommends testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms at least monthly and states that batteries should be replaced once a year or when the alarm chirps signaling a dead battery. The start of a new year is a perfect time to check out all of your home safety devices and procedures.

One of the many reasons family caregivers can feel stressed and burned out this time of year is that they try to manage all caregiving tasks alone. This new year, make it a point to delegate your caregiving duties to others so you can focus on your health and well-being. 🥰

Today is Thank God It’s Monday Day, celebrated every first Monday in January. It takes a special mindset to really appreciate the first day of the work or school week and to view it as a dynamically positive thing. We can see Mondays as a brand new slate. Self-actualization is the key, and it can begin with a positive attitude about Monday mornings.

A joyful present and a well-remembered past—it’s to these things that we raise a glass! Happy New Year from all of us at Homewatch CareGivers of Sterling.
