It is important to know the difference when selecting your insurance coverage:

An EPO is an Exclusive Provider Organization - smaller than an HMO and generally coverage is only within the selected doctors in the network. Outside of the network you will pay the full cost with no coverage.

An HMO is a Health Maintenance Organization - HMO is more restrictive for the patient than a PPO by requiring referrals and requiring all treatment to be done inside the network. The network is somewhat larger than an EPO. Outside the network, is generally all out of pocket.

A PPO is a Preferred Provider Organization - and allows you to use the services of in and out of network care. These are less restrictive and in most cases are the employer-sponsored health plan.

Each type connects different combinations of patients, physicians, pharmacists, hospitals, labs and so forth into a network whose main advantage to the consumer is that it lowers health care costs.

PPOs are preferred if you are looking for the ability to go in and out of the network and have more choices for care. You can travel as well across the USA and not worry if you're covered.
