Gaining distance can be an important factor to improving your golf game.
Controlling your distances, one could argue, is even more important. Especially, when the majority of the shots you hit are inside 120 yards.
Today we took our to the range and practiced different wedge shots at different speeds.
You SHOULD NOT do golf performance training⁉️
If, playing multiple rounds throughout the season without soreness or pain, isn’t a priority.
This golfer has only been working with us for the last three months. Today during his session he said “I’ve played 21 rounds of golf in the last 22 days, and I feel great 😊”
This coming from a guy who would need to take a week off after back to back rounds.
Are you frustrated with the fact that you’re having to club up on all your iron shots⁉️
There’s certainly a time and place when the safe shot, is taking the higher club and making a 3/4 swing.
Having to club up and still make a full swing is another story. If you feel like you have to muscle your way around the course, that’s when the scores start going up.
The benefits of golf performance training is you don’t have to change your swing, you just have to change the way you train‼️
Struggling to get through 18 ⛳️without pain or tightness!?
One of the many reasons our golfers enjoy their programs, is the benefit of playing multiple rounds in a week, and not being limited by aches and pains.
We combine movements to better prepare our players so they can endure the lengthy season.
Rehab to performance‼️
One of the things we hear over and over again from patients, “I’m worried about re-injuring ____”
Many of these patients have tried physical therapy and chiropractic care in the past. They’ve even gotten better and even returned to the activities they once were missing out on.
However, somewhere down the road the same injury begins to reappear. They are left frustrated and question if they should just quit said activity all together.
When we ask if their past care progressed them from rehab exercises, to similar movements they do as part of their normal workout, the overwhelming response is, NO.
The only way we can assure if our care has made an improvement, is to gradually blend similar exercises and movements our patients will one day return to.
One of the questions we ask golfers before they begin training with us is, “what current exercises are you doing to help strengthen your game?”.
For the lower body, the majority of them will say squats, deadlifts, and lunges. They’ll follow this up with, noticing a loss in distance, or no change in their current distances.
Rarely, will they mention any kind of rotational movements as part of their training.
Besides an improvement in equipment and technology, the #1 reason the pros are hitting the ball further than ever before, is how they train in the weight room.
See 👀 the difference between the two clips?
In the first clip you can see the athletes (pitcher) shoulder blade begins rotating as soon as he presses the weight.
The second clip he’s using his left hand as feed back for better control over the shoulder blade.
If you struggle with shoulder pain, this is a great drill to start developing better control with pressing movements.
Raise 🙋🏻♂️your hand if you’ve heard the following from a golf instructor:
⛳️ you’re too steep in transition
⛳️you need to improve your depth
⛳️you need more shoulder turn
⛳️you’re not getting onto your lead side
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, this exercise can help.
PGA turn players average at 90 degrees of shoulder turn, amateur golfers are lucky if they can get past 45 degrees.
We typically use this as part of our warm ups for our golfers. Most of our golfers are able to do 2-3 sets of 8-10 reps (weighted and unweighted)
Mobility for golfers‼️
Exercise Tips:
🏌🏻Use the breath during the movement
🏌🏻breath in while on your side, as you exhale open the chest & bring the top shoulder towards the floor, breath back in and return to the starting position
🏌🏻throughout the mobility exercise, you should applying light tension with your legs into the hands,
🏌🏻perform this exercise 6-8 times on each side

Speed Training to increase Swing Speed!! - Dynamic Integration Sports Medicine

This will require the player to maintain control of their swing to add ball speed Speed training is a crucial aspect of a well-balanced golf performance training program, just as important as flexibility and mobility workouts are. Both of these graphs demonstrate how swing speed can increase if the proper training is implemented.
Now focus on the graph on the RIGHT. Notice that even at 50 years of age, improvements in swing speed can occur with proper programming.
I overheard a personal trainer (who knew nothing about golf) telling a client swing speed peaks around your mid 20s. Not sure where they got that information, as you can see from the graph on the left, it certainly peaks in the early 20s, and then is sustained for 30 years.
One of the biggest concerns our golfers have, is thinking there’s no way they can improve speed, let alone distance. We are here to tell you that’s just not true. Know the facts!!
This patient had a serious ankle fracture that required 3 pins to repair/stabilize the bone.
She began PT with the Ortho clinic that performed her surgery. For someone with an active job/lifestyle and former 2 sport athlete, she felt the physical therapy sessions were watered down.
Her main goal is to be able to return to work (Colorado National Parks service) without fear of further injury. Her job requires her to hike with a rucksack weighing anywhere between (40-60lbs).
She felt with the care she received from the prior clinic, she may never return to her true passion. Not only was she able to progress to the gym floor today, but she was also able to walk around DC (w/her boot) this past Fri/Sat/Sun!!! Major progress in our book.
Have you been let down by your past physical therapist/chiropractor?
If so, we hear this all the time. Personally, I’ve worked at several practices throughout Loudoun County, claiming to “specialize” in treating athletes and active adults. Only to find the treatments and services provided were no different than a run of the mill clinic.
If you think you’re going to come in and:
*be put on electrical stim for 10-15min
*work with a therapist that’s also assisting 2-3 other patients
*shown some boring exercises you could have easily found on YouTube
That’s not what you’ll find here. And if that’s what you’re expecting, we’re not the right clinic for you.
If, however, you want an experience that revolves around fixing the problem, so you can return to a high level of activity, without worrying if the next rep/exercise is the straw that broke the camels back, we would be happy to have a conversation if you fit our level of care.
Do you want to be able to hit the golf ball further with less effort?
Most amateur and weekend golfers biggest problem, is their ability to correctly use the ground.
We use a number of lower body exercises to improve strength, balance, and lower body coordination, to improve a golfers speed.

What are squats doing for my Golf Game!? - Dynamic Integration Sports Medicine
Here’s a scenario for you. You’ve just split the fairway on the par-4 18th, and you’re ready to cap off a great round. Perhaps, one of the best rounds you’ve played this year. You arrive at your ball and realize you’re in a bit of a pickle: the fairway slopes hard from left to right and you have an extreme side hill lie with a long iron for your second shot....

Do you want to shoot lower scores ⛳️⁉️
One question we ask all our golfers, “If you’re hitting your 2nd shot on a par 4, do you feel more confident making par with a 5/6 iron or an 8/9 iron?”
Golf performance training helps golfers of all skill levels Increasing swing speed & getting longer off the tee.

This patient came to us with left knee pain. She’s a volleyball player who has also begun powerlifting.
This was one of many tests we performed to determine the source of her knee pain.
A few things we found:
1.) limited ankle mobility bilaterally
2.) weak hip rotators in relation to body mass
3.) weak left hamstring
4.) excessive loading of the forefoot when landing
5.) excessive knee flexion with limited hip hinging when landing
Another thing worth mentioning. When we watched her squat with lifters vs without, her movement drastically changed.
Even though this athlete is being coached by a nationally ranked power lifter, we are still able to help improve her overall movement quality, get out of pain, and fill in these gaps that have yet to be addressed.
Two lessons in and I’ve already noticed a big difference in my swing.
Currently working on the take away to create better depth in the back swing.
I have a completely different feel at the top of my backswing, but with continued reps this can only get better.
Pumped for this season‼️

We are not talking about curls for the girls. We are talking about getting through 18 holes without back pain💪
Is this video, Dr. Matt demonstrates his favorite hip exercise to help protect a golfers low back.
If you strengthen the rotators of the hips and pelvis, this reduces the rotation in the low back substantially.

Lastly, for those of you who have already entered the raffle, or referred to us in the past, thank you. It means more to us than you know!
Talk soon,
Dr. Matt
P.S. Not sure if your loved one is a good fit for a referral? Let us be a resource. If we can’t help, we’ll let them know.
This patient originally came in for hip pain, in our time working together he expressed issues with his shoulders.
In the first clip you can see:
1.) right shoulder higher than left
2.) right shoulder is internally rotated
3.) left shoulder is externally rotated
4.) as he lowers the arms down his left shoulder blade begins to externally rotate & flex at a faster rate than the right
On the second video you see:
1.) shoulder are closer to level
2.) right shoulder less internally rotated
3.) left shoulder less externally rotated
4.) yes, left shoulder blade still rotates faster than right but the movement is less “choppy” and still improved
All we did from video one and two is:
1.) exercises to mobilize his rib cage
2.) exercises to target specific weaknesses of his right and left shoulder

Does a Rotator Cuff tear require surgery?? - Dynamic Integration Sports Medicine
In a typical year, surgeons in the US perform more than 270,000 rotator cuff surgeries, and more than 90% of these surgeries involve the supraspinatus tendon. Because the average cost of a rotator cuff repair is about $25,000, this translates into Americans spending almost 7 billion dollars annually for the surgical management of rotator cuff tears. What’s worse, because our population is aging and remaining active, these numbers are expected to increase in the next few years....

1st clip was our first visit. What we saw during this eval:
- Torso shifted to left
- limited right pelvic rotation
- ⬇️ ankle mobility
- pelvis tipped forward anteriorly
2nd clip was during her 6th visit today 2/2/22. What we noticed in comparison:
- no torso lean
- improved right pelvic rotation (still needs improvement)
- pelvic position has improved (still needs improvement)
This patient came in with low back pain (from a disc herniation in low back), Nerve pain down right leg, along with some issues stemming from a weak pelvic floor.
Seeing great changes in a short amount of time.

Hard to believe it’s already been two years since we started the practice. We’ve been blessed to be surround by an amazing support system. From our good friends & for giving us a place to call home. To my incredibly supportive wife .alexis who lifts me up everyday. And of course all the patients who have entrusted us with their care along the way, we thank you 🙏. Can’t wait to see what 2022 has in store.

In todays blog we cover some of the assessment tools used to assess our patients who come in for hip and back pain issues.
Many of our active patients don’t realize how weak their hips actually are.
In our assessments we use a device that measures specific hip strength.
Based on the results from these measurements it helps us pinpoint areas that need improvement.
