ABOUT SUNDAY FEB 13 SNOW THREAT
This will give you a brief summary of where things stand this Thursday morning with regard to the event on Sunday. As usual there are a couple of different options or scenarios on the table.

The operational GFS, as well as the GFS ensembles models are the most aggressive or "bullish" with the liquid precipitation equivalent / snowfall in Virginia and the Delmarva while the European model is the weakest with the overall snowfall and the actual amount of precipitation ,

The 0z Thursday Operational GFS and GFS ensembles did not change from Wednesday afternoon. They continue to show a moderate snowstorm in Northwest NC and most of Virginia
EXCEPT for Hampton Roads into Baltimore DC the Delmarva and southern New Jersey with a large area of 4 -8 inch snowfall across all of that area.

But the early morning Canadian and European models showed a much weaker system. Those models shows the LOW pressure area is much weaker -- it produces less overall precipitation and because the precipitation is lighter ...the temperatures were more marginal so the snowfall was far less significant. These models still had an 1-2 inches of snow much of VA and northwest NC into the Delmarva but it is a much weaker system overall compared to
last 5 runs of the GFS models.

Then this morning that 6z operational GFS model came out ( at
6am) and it continued to show a widespread significant snowstorm for the same portion of the Mid-Atlantic; the northwest 3rd of NC... all of VA except for Hampton Roads DC BAL southern MD all fo the Delmarva into southern New Jersey. The model had a widespread 4 - 8 inch snowfall in this area which again is continuation of the last several runs. The 6z Thursday op GFS was mentioned this morning by Jim Cantore and most of the local TV stations in Maryland Delaware and Virginia. In fact there is a concentration of 8 inch snowfalls or better in the VA Piedmont between Farmville Lynchburg and Charlottesville. The model gives Richmond almost 6 inches of snow Fredericksburg 7.5 Charlottesville 8 inches… Farmville 8.5:.... Staunton 6.5: ..4 inches in DC 5.5 inches Salisbury Maryland and 5 inches in Roanoke.

KEY POINT HERE THAT YOU NEED TO GET -- Since the operational GFS and the GFS ensemble are out there by themselves we are looking to see if other models are turning towards the GFS solution as we get closer to the event.

In other words TRENDS

The 6z Operational or regular European model and the 6z Euro ensembles have trended wetter this morning for Sunday. They now have a 2 or 3 inch snow band for most of the Shenandoah Valley and 1 to 2 inches across central VAA in and around Charlottesville Fredericksburg DC Patuxent River Richmond and the Delmarva into southern NJ. This is a moderate increase when compared to what the model showing only 6 hours ago.

However the operational early morning British model continues to show almost no event of any kind.

WxRisk Is close to issuing a SNOW DAWGGIE WATCH…. But we'll wait a little bit to see how things develop.
