After working with café owners across the country, here are 5 habits we've seen make the difference between a café that survives — and one that thrives long enough to fulfil its mission:

1️⃣ Do a weekly 15-minute numbers check
Sales vs last week. Labour %. Cost of goods. Unusual expenses. You don't need to be an accountant — you just need to be consistent.

2️⃣ Know your labour cost percentage
It should sit between 28–35% of revenue. If you're not tracking it, you can't fix it. This single number will tell you more about your café's health than almost anything else.

3️⃣ Separate your personal and business finances
One business account. One business card. No exceptions. Mixing money is one of the most common — and most damaging — habits we see in small cafés.

4️⃣ Build a 3-month cash reserve
Equipment breaks. Slow seasons come. A cash buffer isn't a luxury — it's what keeps your doors open and your mission alive when things get hard.

5️⃣ Review your menu pricing every 6 months
Your costs change. Your prices should too. Serving your community well doesn't mean absorbing every cost increase yourself.
