Do you have a flood plan?
Before: Make a plan before it floods. Follow three steps to prepare:
1. If you have flood insurance, make sure you know your policy number in case you need to file a claim. Learn what else you might need here: ready.gov/flood
2. Know your stuff: Document your belongings to support a flood insurance claim. Visit knowyourstuff.org to create your home inventory.
3. Make a plan: Create and share a family emergency plan. Learn more at ready.gov/floods.
During: Protect yourself during a flood. Learn the steps to stay safe:
1. Listen for updates: Tune into the radio or TV for information, and be sure to follow the instructions of local authorities.
2. Move to high ground: When it floods, avoid streams, drainage channels, and areas known to flood.
3. Watch out for high water: Did you know water just six inches deep can knock you off your feet, and even two feet of water is enough to sweep a car off the road.
4. Turn off power: Turn off the main power switch and close the main gas valve. Don't touch any electrical devices if you're wet or in standing water.
After: Follow these four steps to recover quickly after a flood:
1. Check for Damage: If you suspect damage to water, gas, electric, or sewer lines, contact local authorities.
2. Remove Wet Items: Any item holding moisture can develop mold within 24 to 48 hours. Get cleanup tips at ready.gov/flood.
3. Plan Before You Repair: Contact your local building inspection or planning office or your county clerk's office to get more information on how to rebuild your home safer to mitigate future risk.
4. File Your Claim: You’ll need your insurance company's name, your policy number, and a number where you can be reached. Start making a list and take photos of damaged items. ready.gov/flood.
