🌿🐆 Amazon Jaguar Festival 2025 🐆🌿
We’re excited to support our colleagues and friends as they launch the Amazon Jaguar Festival 2025, a community-led initiative headed by bringing together art, Indigenous culture, science, and conservation to honor the jaguar’s cultural and ecological importance.
📅 Dates & Locations
✨ Leticia (Peru–Colombia–Brazil): Nov 14–17
✨ Puerto Maldonado (Peru): Nov 25–29 (culminating on International Jaguar Day) 🐆
The jaguar is both a sacred symbol in Indigenous worldviews and a keystone species for the balance of the Amazon, yet it faces growing threats from deforestation and illegal trafficking. This festival is a community-led call to protect the jaguar, revitalize ancestral cultures, and inspire the next generation of environmental defenders.

Last field season, video journalists Georgia Krause (Seattle, WA) and Andrea Ramos Maldonado (Lima, Peru) were with the team at in Peru, capturing the lively and fast-paced activity of our research during the peak of the season. 🌿 We are very excited to share their final works!
There's more to it than just recording the action! 📹 To create final products like Georgia & Andrea do, hundreds of hours of footage must be meticulously edited for quality and, most importantly, for purpose. Will this video demonstrate detailed protocols for a scientific audience? 🧬 Will it tell a moving story of wildlife conservation to the animal-loving public? 🐾 Mastering this skill is key to effective scientific communication! 📝
Enjoy some photos and stay tuned for their final works!

Doctors’ orders. Get outside and enjoy the plant s*x.
For two years, the FPI field team worked tirelessly to facilitate the filming of Emperor tamarin groups for BBC 's latest project, "The Americas", narrated by Tom Hanks. While they may be a new face to television, these tamarins have been studied by our team since 2009, monitoring population, behavior, disease, and more. They face an increasingly threatened landscape, as do all the constituents of the Amazon rainforest.
Under the guidance of .a.e.w. & , the tireless work of field team members .insitu & .nick made this incredible segment come to life. A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible!
These resilient primates have made their debut in Episode 4, titled "The Amazon", streaming on Peacock & NBC! We hope that this exposure brings more attention to their conservation, and the critical work we do worldwide. 🐒

Congratulations to Rachel Voyt who just defended her PhD on genetic chimerism in wild tamarins at UT-Austin.
Chimerism is a fascinating phenomenon where an individual carries two or more distinct sets of DNA, often as a result of sharing cells with a twin during early development. 🧬 Though very rare in humans, it has caused some mind-blowing child custody legal cases. Its occurrence in tamarins is not rare, so we are eager to understand the role of genetic chimerism on social behavior, reproduction and survival strategies.
We are grateful for all the hard work that went into this and can’t wait for details to be released.

The application deadline for our Reptile & Amphibian Surveillance program in central Vietnam is fast approaching - December 1st!
This research program with the Institute of Ecology and Conservation of Nature at Vinh University has several important objectives, including:
1) Monitoring how human activities (hunting, farming, and mining) are affecting nearby herpetofauna communities. This requires surveying sites along a gradient from ‘nearby’ to ‘far from’ villages in the Annamite mountain range.
2) Collecting animal richness and abundance data that, over a long time period (10+ years), informs us about the impacts of climate change, since herpetofauna are key indicators of ecological health.
3) Evaluating the status of Chytrid fungus, a pathogen that is present in Vietnam and can be highly detrimental to amphibian population survival, especially in conjunction with the factors mentioned above.
4) Utilizing samples collected by these surveys, building in situ molecular laboratory capacity for filling global gaps in wildlife genetic reference data, wildlife forensics, pathogen monitoring, and population genetic assessment.
We are accepting volunteers to assist in our January field survey that will help grow our working relationship with IECN, Vinh University, and contribute to this critically important wildlife research effort. Did you know that a large proportion of Vietnam’s herpetofauna are lacking an IUCN Red List status?

🕷️🎃 This Halloween, beware... 🎃🕷️
The scariest creature lurking in the shadows isn't a ghost or ghoul—it's a fungi! 🍄 Cordyceps is a parasitic fungi that takes control of the mind and body, turning its hosts into real-life zombies. 🧟🧠 Consumed from the inside out, victims become mindless wanderers, spreading fungal spores from high up until the end. 🐜
This year's team got up close and personal with the frightening fungi, and thankfully Cordyceps hasn't developed a taste for humans... yet.
Happy Halloween! 🕸️🦗
