Forty years before there was a St. Louis, French miners were digging lead at Old Mines, an hour south on Highway 21. Their descendants are still there, a few of them still speak the French, and this Sunday, October 4, they're holding their fall fête in a new place: Le Village de Vieille Mine, the historical society's rebuilt village of 1840s log cabins, which is usually closed to the public.

Flag raising at 11, events till 4. Dennis Stroughmatt et L'Esprit Creole playing the fiddle tunes, croquignoles fried fresh, French sausage, ham and beans, apple butter, and help finding your Old Mines relatives. Free admission, bring a lawn chair.

50,000 people. One city. One remarkable day.

This week, St. Louis made history as the Dome filled with 50,000 people for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen — the first beatification ever celebrated here.

From thousands of handmade rosaries to pilgrims traveling from across the country and around the world, the whole region came together for a moment that felt distinctly Midwestern.

And at the center of it all was a farm boy from Illinois who spoke to millions of Americans from a television screen.

Throwback Thursday: Lemay, the Town That Built Itself.

No mayor. No city hall. No official town government.

For more than 200 years, Lemay’s neighbors simply built what their community needed — a road, a fire department, a parish, a ballfield, and so much more.

From a ferry crossing named for a troublesome ferryman to Jefferson Barracks, German immigrant farmers, volunteer firefighters, and a hometown major-league pitcher who built a baseball field for local kids…

Lemay’s history is really a story about **neighbors taking care of neighbors.**
