Bedtime can be hard after medical trauma. For children who have experienced treatment, procedures, hospital stays, or separation, sleep can bring big feelings to the surface.
Trauma-informed sleep support starts with safety first.
What helps your child feel safe enough to rest? Tonight, that might be one extra check-in, a comfort item nearby, or a simple phrase you repeat each night: “You are safe. I’m close. I’ll check on you soon.”
Cindy Pilchuk, RN and Certified Child Life Specialist, shares practical ways parents and caregivers can support children when traditional sleep strategies are not enough.

Shared with permission from Denice Lopez, mom to Ayla and Jaylen. 💛
This beautiful, honest video starts with Ayla showing her prosthetic eye and sharing something that is simply part of her world.
Then the conversation opens into something many families know so well: the questions, the explaining, the curiosity from others, and the emotional weight children and siblings can carry as they learn how to respond.
Denice said it thoughtfully: the questions are not always wrong, and children’s curiosity is natural. At the same time, Ayla and Jaylen’s feelings are valid too. This is part of the journey many families navigate quietly, day by day.
At World Eye Cancer Hope, we believe families should not have to navigate that journey alone.
That is one of the reasons exists: to bring families, survivors, children, siblings, doctors, researchers, and care teams together in a space where retinoblastoma is understood without explanation: https://wechope.org/onerbworld/one-rb-world-2026/
This September, One Rb World comes to San Antonio, Texas, with three days of learning, connection, community, and dedicated Child Life programming for children and siblings.
To Denice, Ayla, and Jaylen: thank you for sharing your world with such honesty and heart. We are so grateful to have you in this community!

“There is always the medical journey, but there is also the emotional journey.”
For many families affected by , survival is not the end of the story. The impact of childhood eye cancer can continue through adolescence, adulthood, family planning, sibling relationships, grandparent experiences, second cancer risk, and the quiet moments families carry long after treatment ends.
This World Eye Cancer Hope article brings together the voices of survivors, parents, grandparents, and family members who share honestly about life beyond childhood retinoblastoma care. Their experiences remind us why connection, open conversation, peer support, and lifelong care matter so deeply.
If your family has ever felt alone in the long shadow of Rb, we hope this helps you feel seen.
When Survivors Grow Up: Family Experiences After Retinoblastoma - WE C Hope WE C Hope CEO Abby White asked families and survivors about their experiences of life beyond retinoblastoma, after a particularly painful family insight.

At One Rb World, the Child Life program is so much more than a room full of toys, books, crafts, and games.
It is a place where children can play, ask questions, make friends, explore big feelings, and feel less alone in their retinoblastoma experience.
These photos from our 2024 One Rb World Child Life program in Hawaii capture some of the joy, creativity, laughter, and connection that happen when kids have a space created just for them.
We are thrilled to bring the Child Life program back for One Rb World 2026 in San Antonio, giving children, siblings, young relatives, and children of adult survivors their own place to belong while families and professionals gather, learn, and connect.
