Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski
Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis, installed Aug. 25, 2020.

As Catholics, we look to Pope Leo XIV for guidance, pastoral care, and spiritual leadership.
In being ever faithful to the Gospel, the Holy Father challenges us to bring the light of our faith in Christ to the world in these trying times.
President Donald Trump's crass comments are hurtful in light of Pope Leo’s clear moral voice in addressing both the horrors and fruitlessness of war with Iran.
“I am disheartened that the President chose to write such disparaging words about the Holy Father. Pope Leo is not his rival; nor is the Pope a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ who speaks from the truth of the Gospel and for the care of souls.” - Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, President, USCCB

Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski testified on Monday in support of House Bill 2153, which seeks to abolish the death penalty in Missouri. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Jim Murphy, would eliminate the death penalty as a sentencing option in the state. A hearing took place on March 9 in Jefferson City.
“The revised Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. It is no longer necessary to protect society because we have other means of incarcerating those who commit horrible crimes,” Archbishop Rozanski said in his testimony.
The death penalty also carries the risk of executing innocent persons, the archbishop said. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, since 1973, more than 200 people sentenced to death have later been exonerated.
Several others testified in support of the bill, and no witnesses testified in opposition at the hearing.

The trajectory of future generations depends on us. This Lent, wouldn’t it be beautiful to put intention toward God’s creation in our prayer, our fasting and our almsgiving?

Welcome to Lent! My St. Louis Review column this week looks at this sacred season as a time to reserve time, energy and space to receive the Lord.
As we prepare for the start of Lent this week, Archbishop Rozanski invites us to think about this season as a time to make room for the Lord — setting aside time, energy, and space in our lives so we can more fully receive Him.
In his Serve the Lord with Gladness column, he reflects on how God is far more concerned with the trajectory of our hearts than keeping a tally of our past sins or good deeds. "There can be no coasting for the good; there need be no despair for the sinner," he says.
Lent is an opportunity for us to examine our choices, intentions, and attitudes as we prepare to welcome Christ more deeply at Easter.

In these troubling days, we recognize with heavy hearts that the events unfolding in Minneapolis do not reflect the values we hold dear as a Church and as a Nation. As Catholics, we believe that the dignity of human life is not dependent on legal or any other status.
The Gospel makes this clear, and this belief is reflected in our nation's fundamental principle of inalienable rights, conferred to us not by the government, but by God, our Father.
Please join me in praying fervently that our leaders will work together to seek just and moral solutions to the challenges confronting us.
