In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, many Texans are still suffering through power outages and storm cleanup. Due to the amount of oil exploration and oil refineries in the area, gas production has been stalled, thus leading to dramatic increases in gas prices. Missourians were seeing gas prices as low as $3.08 just weeks ago, and now, $3.49 is the new norm. There is some good news, however, Missouri is a state with the third lowest prices in the nation. https://www.automotive-fleet.com/10213161/top-10-states-with-cheapest-gasoline-prices-january-2024

Hit the Brakes!

You probably don’t give your car’s brakes much thought until, of course, you do. Typically, you’ll notice a squeal (designed by automakers) that alerts you to low or worn brakes. Other signs of worn brakes include a longer stopping distance, a pulsating brake pedal, or a dashboard warning light. Or, when you go for an inspection and are told that your brakes are worn and won’t pass safety inspection. You also notice that your brakes are mushy or don’t feel as firm as they should. Either way, every car component or part has a lifespan.

Brake Lifespan
Most mechanics agree that auto brake pads and rotors (the two primary brake components) have a lifespan of as little as 30,000 miles and may last as long as 70,000 miles max. Your car’s brake life depends on your driving habits, road conditions, city versus highway miles, and brake components used.

In St. Louis, your brakes can get quite the daily workout in stop-and-go traffic, rough roads, sudden stops, and just the daily grind. Rest assured, our expert mechanics at Cyclone Car Care are well-equipped to handle any brake issues.

Turn The Rotors?
It was possible to “turn the rotors” and avoid replacing them each time a brake job was performed. That’s no longer true. Today’s brake pads are thinner and cannot be “turned.”

What’s It Going To Cost Me?
The big question is always: What’s it going to cost me? The national average per axle (front or rear) is typically between $250.00-$500.00, although some cars and trucks require performance brakes and components.

Contrary to popular belief, rear brakes can wear out as fast as front brakes, so you may need to replace one or both soon.

Every Day, Great Prices & No FREE Labor!
Cyclone Car Care always performs superior auto repairs and maintenance at a competitive price. We have extended our FREE labor deal on brakes (front or rear) and are charging a budget-friendly $400.00 (it may be more for some foreign makes and some trucks) all-in for new brakes (rotors and pads) per axle for most standard passenger cars and vans.

No matter what kind of car, van, or truck you drive, we can replace your brakes with great replacement rotors and pads, ensuring your safety and that of your family. Don’t wait to fix your brakes and risk your safety. Drive into Cyclone Car Care and brake for savings.

How about this weather?! Summer in February.

Tomorrow it will hit 83, and then within 24 hours, drop back into the 20's at night. That kind of change can be hard on your car.

Ensuring that both your car's AC and heater are working and can handle the big swings, is important.

No matter the weather, rain or shine, snow, or sleet, we can help you keep your car in good running order.

Expiration Date

As anyone who’s ever owned a car can attest, eventually, things wear out. Whether worn tires that lose their treads or a battery that won’t turn over, there’s a shelf life to everything, including your car’s, truck’s, and van’s components.

The lifespan of auto components can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the quality of the parts, how well they are maintained, driving conditions, and the vehicle's usage.

The Lowdown: Your Mileage May Vary

Here's a general overview of the lifespan of some standard auto components:

Battery: Typically lasts around three to five years but can vary based on driving habits and climate (specifically cold climates).

Brake Pads: Usually need replacement every 30,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on driving style and conditions. City driving is typically harder on brakes, pads, rotors, etc. than highway driving.

Tires: Lifespan can range from 25,000 to 75,000 miles or more, depending on tire quality, driving habits, and road conditions. Routine alignments, tire rotations, and balancing can help extend the lifespan of your tires, as can maintaining proper air pressure.

Engine: With proper maintenance, engines can last well over 100,000 miles, often reaching 200,000 or more. Engine lifespan can be enhanced or prolonged by proper routine maintenance, including oil changes.

Transmission: This can last anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 miles or more with proper maintenance but can vary based on usage and driving conditions.

Suspension Components: Depending on road conditions and maintenance, these can last anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 miles or more.

Alternator and Starter: Typically last around 100,000 to 150,000 miles but can vary based on usage and quality of the components.

These are just general guidelines or estimates, and your experience may vary widely depending on driving habits and the make of the car. Regular maintenance, such as oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections, can significantly extend the lifespan of auto components. High-quality parts and careful driving habits can also contribute to longer component life.

Drive Long and Prosper

Cyclone Car Care is dedicated to helping you get the best performance and longest lifespan of your car and all your components. When your auto finally needs new parts, we are here to help. We can replace any part with new, OEM, or salvaged parts, including rebuilt engines.

Oh, no!

Life is full of unpleasant surprises and inconveniences, and one of them is car problems, specifically a car, van, or truck that won’t start. And it always seems to happen at the worst time and place.

A car can fail to start any time, but cold weather can make it more likely to occur for a few reasons we’ve already covered recently.

If your car, van, or truck won’t start, here’s an extensive list of the possible causes:

Dead Battery:
A dead or weak battery is a frequent cause of starting problems. Check if the lights on the dashboard are dim or if there is no response when you turn the key.

As we’ve already discussed, cold weather can negatively impact your battery’s operation.

Faulty Starter Motor:
The starter motor is responsible for turning the engine. If it fails, the engine won't crank. A failing or failed starter typically produces a clicking sound when you try to start your vehicle.

Ignition Switch Issues:
A malfunctioning ignition switch can prevent the electrical system from engaging correctly. The ignition switch could be the culprit if turning the key produces no response.

Fuel System Problems:
Issues with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel pump, can prevent the engine from receiving the necessary fuel to start.

No Fuel:
This one seems pretty obvious, but sometimes folks get so busy with life that they forget to fill up. Fortunately, this is an easy and quick fix, even with high gas prices.

On a related note, it’s a good idea to keep your gas tank full or as close as full as possible, especially when it’s cold outside. A full tank is better for your car and its system when the tank is full. A low gas tank allows the lines to freeze by taking up the space in a low or nearly empty tank.

Faulty Fuel Injectors:
If the fuel injectors are not delivering the right amount of fuel to the engine, it can result in starting problems.

Ignition System Issues:
Problems with the ignition system, such as a faulty spark plug or ignition coil, can lead to starting issues. A lack of spark may prevent the engine from turning over.

Faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor:
The crankshaft position sensor provides information to the engine control unit. If it fails, the engine may not start.

Issues with the Security System:
Some cars have security systems that can prevent the engine from starting if they detect unauthorized access or tampering. Check for security system warning lights.

Sometimes, these systems can be faulty, and the issues may require further diagnosis to isolate them.

Faulty Alternator:
While a failing alternator typically affects the charging system, if it fails, it can lead to a dead battery, preventing the car from starting.

Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF):
The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine. If it fails, the engine may not receive the proper air-fuel mixture for combustion.

Broken Timing Belt:
A broken timing belt can cause severe engine damage and prevent the engine from starting. This is more common in older cars with timing belts rather than timing chains.

Engine Overheating:
An engine that has overheated may refuse to start. Check for signs of overheating, such as steam or a high-temperature warning light.

Obviously, at this time of year, this is very unlikely.

Transmission Issues:
If the car is in gear or has transmission problems, it may not start. Ensure the vehicle is in the "Park" or "Neutral" position if it has an automatic transmission.

Let’s Get Started
If your car is experiencing starting problems, bring it to us. We have seen it all and can diagnose the issue or issues, get it fixed, and get you back on the road.

Call Karen at (314) 843-3800, and let’s schedule you.

Oh, no, a dead battery!

These record-low temperatures are making life miserable for man and beast.

Cold weather also significantly and directly impacts your car's starts and operations.

Cold weather can have a significant impact on a car battery's performance for several reasons:

Chemical Reactions Slow Down: Cold temperatures slow down the chemical reactions within a battery. In a standard lead-acid battery, common in automobiles, chemical reactions between the lead dioxide (positive plate) and sponge lead (negative plate) are essential for generating electrical energy. When it's cold, these reactions occur more slowly, reducing the battery's ability to produce and deliver power.

Increased Internal Resistance: Cold weather increases the internal resistance of the battery. Internal resistance is the opposition a battery faces when trying to deliver power. As the temperature drops, the electrolyte fluid inside the battery thickens, making it harder for chemical reactions and increasing the internal resistance. This results in a reduction in the battery's output voltage and available power.

Oil Thickening: In icy conditions, engine oil tends to thicken, making it more challenging for the engine to turn over. This increased resistance increases the battery's demand for additional power to start the engine. If the battery is weakened due to the cold, it may need help to meet this demand.

Reduced Capacity: Cold temperatures reduce the overall capacity of a battery. Batteries are rated based on their capacity to deliver power over a specific period, typically measured in ampere-hours (Ah). Cold weather can decrease this capacity, limiting the energy the battery can store and supply.

Chemical Changes: Cold temperatures can change the battery's chemistry. For example, lead sulfate, a byproduct of the chemical reactions in the battery, can accumulate on the battery plates in cold conditions. This accumulation can reduce the battery's ability to charge and discharge efficiently.

To mitigate the impact of cold weather on a car battery, it's advisable to:

Use a Battery Blanket or Heater: Keeping the battery warm can help maintain its performance in cold weather.

Park in a Garage: Parking the vehicle in a garage can provide some insulation against extreme cold.

Use a Battery with Cold-Cranking Amps (CCA): Batteries designed for cold weather usually have a higher CCA rating, indicating their ability to start an engine in cold conditions.
Regularly Check and Maintain the Battery: Ensuring the battery is in good condition and adequately charged can improve its performance in cold weather.

Despite these precautions, extreme cold can still pose challenges for car batteries, and in severe conditions, a weakened or older battery may struggle to start the vehicle. If your battery has gone dead or is beginning to drain, let us look and see if you need a new one. If you do, we have all kinds of great batteries to fit any make, model, and budget.

Until recently, we've been very lucky weather-wise. We've enjoyed warmer-than-usual temperatures and very little snow or ice. Well, these unseasonably warm temperatures are about to end. This week's forecast shows negative temperatures and the possibility of more snow.

Cold temperatures can mean car trouble. Car batteries definitely can be stressed by freezing temperatures, and your brakes, tires, and car's heater all get a workout. Please be prepared and stay safe.

Please ensure your St. Louis truck, car, van, or work fleet is ready for the winter weather and nearly negative temperatures.

Call Karen today if you need to book winter maintenance or if your battery is getting old and weak. (314) 843-3800.

Most people think squirrels are pretty cute little critters. And, for the most part, they are. Until, of course, they chew through your car's wiring and wreak havoc.

As temperatures drop, squirrels seek warmth, and your engine is warm. Plus, there's a buffet of wires to keep their teeth honed and trimmed. Squirrels' teeth can grow as much as six inches a year! To keep those teeth filed down, they chew on things, including your van's, truck's, or car's wiring.

Cyclone Car Care has seen it all before--snakes, mice, birds, raccoons, and squirrels. Critters like to be comfortable and protected from the elements, just like we do.

If you suspect or see animals under your hood, check for obvious damage and make sure they're out from under the hood. If they have caused damage, especially chewing through wires, we can help fix these little guy's damage.

Do OBD-II’s Work?
If you’re a curious and intelligent consumer, you’ve probably wondered whether new auto-diagnostic code scanners work and can accurately diagnose issues. The answer is a bit more complicated than it might first seem.

What are Auto Diagnostic Code Scanners (OBD-II’s)?
Auto diagnostic code scanners, often called OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) scanners, can accurately provide diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in a vehicle's computer system. These codes indicate issues with various car components.

Are OBD-II’s Accurate?
The accuracy of the codes provided by OBD-II scanners is generally reliable because they retrieve standardized codes from the vehicle's computer. These codes are part of a universal system implemented across all modern cars (manufactured after 1996 in the US) adhering to OBD-II standards.

However, it's important to note a few considerations regarding the accuracy and interpretation of diagnostic codes:
Interpretation: While the codes are standardized, interpreting them and pinpointing the exact issue often requires expertise. A single code might indicate various potential problems and further diagnosis may be necessary to identify the specific issue accurately.

False Readings: Sometimes, OBD-II scanners might provide codes that aren't directly related to a malfunctioning part but are triggered by certain conditions. These could include temporary sensor glitches, loose connections, temperature-related issues, or momentary issues that don't require immediate attention.

Limited Information: Diagnostic codes provide a good starting point for identifying issues but only sometimes offer detailed information about the root cause. Additional diagnostics and inspections may be necessary to understand the problem thoroughly.

Complex Issues: Some vehicle system problems may not trigger a specific diagnostic trouble code. In such cases, interpreting the issue solely based on the codes might be challenging.

Variation Across Scanners: Different OBD-II scanners might have varying levels of accuracy and capabilities. Higher-end professional-grade scanners (like the ones used by Cyclone Car Care) often offer more detailed diagnostic information than basic consumer-grade scanners.

At Cyclone Car Care, your trusted St. Louis auto specialists, we’ve seen just about every issue in our 20+ years in business, and we have both the advanced equipment and automotive knowledge to accurately and thoroughly diagnose issues, rule out multiple factors, and fix the problems. Experience and expertise count when correctly analyzing the issue or issues and determining the best solution.

If your check engine light or other sensor comes on, stop by and let us do a quick diagnostic check. Using an auto-code scanning device or dropping by AutoZone isn’t terrible. If you want more certainty and an accurate analysis, call us.

11/22/2023

We are closing early today. We want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy food, family, friends and football.

We'll be closed Friday, too, so we'll see you Monday morning.

A rebuilt engine might be an excellent option for you and your family.

With the sky-high prices of new cars and the current automotive labor strike leading to delays in new auto production, dropping in a rebuilt engine is a great option to help you save money and extend your auto's life.

A rebuilt engine might be a great option if you don't want the headache of new car payments, your car's body and most of the other components of your car are still in good shape, and you don't want the increased costs of higher car insurance premiums and personal property taxes.

Many of our rebuilt engines carry a four-year or 100,000-mile warranty, so it's an excellent option for those who want to save big bucks and don't care about having the newest car. Save money, and keep your car, truck, and van on the road longer.
