Hello 2022-2023!
We are so excited to start the new school year. Please know that LECE classrooms, including our Caterpillar Room, will be using the SeeSaw app this year to connect with families and share classroom happenings rather than our class page, so please be sure to download that app and register. (We will send you the information to connect to our classroom SeeSaw page soon.)
If you are wanting to receive information through Facebook, please be sure to like the LECE page: Lindbergh Early Childhood Education. On that page, you will learn about school-wide events!

It was great to meet everyone at Meet the Teacher Night! We look forward to seeing you in the Caterpillar Room next week!

Our caterpillar / chrysalis / butterfly update!
Monday morning - 2 butterflies
Tuesday morning - 3 butterflies
Tuesday at pick-up time: all 5 butterflies!
We got to see one of the butterflies emerge from the chrysalis on Tuesday, and the 5th one emerged during story time (so we missed that one)!
Wednesday just before pick-up time we let 3 of the butterflies go outside near the pavilion. We had to take advantage of the beautiful weather! We sang our Goodbye song to them as they flew away!
The Tuesday/Thursday class will let the other 2 butterflies go tomorrow.
Here are the photos! Some of the photos were taken by student photographers!

25/04/2022

We had a surprise waiting for us on our science table this morning! Two out of five butterflies have emerged from their chrysalises! I'll share photos later this week. They were pretty shy about opening their wings to show us their orange colors.
We talked about why they keep their wings closed and only show the brown and grayish parts of their wings. Several of the students remembered that butterflies protect themselves from predators by blending in. They also remembered that 2 of the predators might be birds or frogs. We read that in one of our butterfly books last week!
Once all 5 butterflies emerge, we will let them go outside (a few with the MWF class and the rest with the TR class).

24/04/2022

This week in the Caterpillar Room...
Wednesday: Spirit Day - Wear green and gold!
Thursday / Friday: Pajama Day! Wear those JAMMIES to school!
Saturday: Last chance to order Scholastic books for the school year!

We will continue to watch our chrysalises to see our butterflies emerge. See photo from Friday. I added some orange slices just in case any emerged during the weekend.
We've been:
-camping and fishing in our dramatic area
-building with Legos and playing games in our math area
-painting, drawing, and cutting in our art area
-building with blocks & Marbleworks in our block area
-reading books written by Robert Munsch and illustrated by Michael Marchenko
-voting, counting, graphing, and comparing amounts to decide our story time book for the day
-reading books about caterpillars and butterflies while learning about their life cycle
-working on catching, throwing, hopping on one foot, and skipping
and
-practicing self-control when we are part of an audience.

We celebrated Earth Day on Friday by reading "The Earth Book" by Todd Parr while sitting outside on blankets. Then we made recycled paper in our classroom!

17/04/2022

This week in the Caterpillar Room...
Tuesday: Tacky & Wacky Day! Wear wild and crazy outfits and hair! Be creative!
Wednesday: Wacky & Tacky Day! Wear wild and crazy outfits and hair! Be creative!
Friday: Earth Day

We will continue to study our live caterpillars (which were beginning to enter the chrysalis stage at the end of the week). We are changing our dramatic area to a campsite. The brainstorming sessions we had on Wednesday and Thursday were fantastic! The kids had MANY ideas of things we should have to go pretend camping! They started making paper representations of their ideas (because both the MWF and TR classes love to make their own props)! So far we have: a paper tree, apples, oranges, plums, leaves, bananas, s'mores, flowers, a caterpillar, owls, stars, moons, a nest, a bird, and a cave.
In addition to the paper props that students already made, the Caterpillars also suggested: a tent, wood, fire, a boat, fishing poles, fish, water, a cooler, pans, backpacks, sleeping bags, lanterns, and camping sound effects! The kids are SUPER excited!
While we learn about camping, the students will also take on roles and develop play themes, work on turn-taking and patience, develop fine and gross motor skills, practice aiming and coordination (while fishing), sharpen their collaboration and communication skills, and display respect and responsibility towards others and materials. Can't wait!

Photos from LECE Caterpillar Room's post 11/04/2022

Our live caterpillars grew so much over the weekend! They're HUGE!
We talked about the caterpillar life cycle and looked at our caterpillars with a magnifying glass. We read "The Very Impatient Caterpillar" and then read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" with interactive story props.

10/04/2022

This week in the Caterpillar Room...
Thursday: Spirit Day! Wear green and gold!
Friday: No School - Professional Learning Day

-We will continue to learn about construction and tools in our dramatic area.
-We'll be keeping a close eye on our live caterpillars and learning about the life cycle of the caterpillar.
-We will continue voting, counting, comparing, and graphing to decide which book by Robert Munsch we will read for story time.

Family Friday was competitive and fun... and our Family Clue Game ended in a tie! We divided into 2 teams and then gave each team pictures of the Caterpillar students. Mrs. Beel was the judge, Mrs. Darr read the clues, and the teams talked to each other and then decided who the mystery student/family might be. They brought the photo to Mrs. Beel and the team with the correct answer received a point. Some of the clues were super tricky! Both teams ended up with 13 points (there were 19 questions total) and it was a fun day.

Get ready for Artsy Thursday! (And Cardinal Day!)

During Story Time, we are working on literacy skills, including: naming the parts of a book, talking about the author & illustrator, making predictions about what may happen in a story, recalling story facts, and making personal connections to our lives or to other books we've read. They are learning to make logical predictions about stories by paying close attention and using their audience skills: eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, and body calm.
Your student might be talking about the parts of a book when you read at home. Have they told you about the front cover, back cover, spine, title page, title, and endpapers? The class reminds me to ask them what each part is called if I start reading without doing so!

16/01/2022

This week in the Caterpillar Room...

Friday - St. Louis Blues Day! Wear Blues gear or the color blue!

We've changed our dramatic area to a stage. There's singing, dancing, tickets, audience seating, a concession stand with pretend popcorn and drinks, backstage sound & lighting equipment controls, and lots of music!
During story time we are talking about parts of a book, including: front cover, back cover, spine, title, author, illustrator, end papers, and title page. We are reading a series of books by the same author (Valerie Thomas in the MWF class & Ian Falconer in the TR class), and making predictions based on what we know about the main character. Students are recalling story facts and listening/watching for details while we read.
