Did you know that July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month?

Originally recognized as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, July is set aside to highlight the unique mental health challenges and needs of historically disenfranchised or oppressed racial and ethnic groups in America. BIPOC stands for Black and indigenous people of color, and often these ethnic communities lack access to services, providers and more. At Tunnel Light, we believe there is no health without mental health, and we are committed to making sure BIPOC communities have the information they need to sustain their mental health.

As Mental Health America puts it, "People of color and all those whose lives have been marginalized by those in power experience life differently from those whose lives have not been devalued. They experience overt racism and bigotry far too often, which leads to a mental health burden that is deeper than what others may face."

We wanted to share with you this webinar from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships. It's called, "Addressing Systemic Racism: One Year Later, Where Are We Now?" It takes place THIS FRIDAY, June 18 from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. CST.

From one of our Board Members:
I deeply love someone, who has been recently diagnosed, with Bipolar Disorder. It’s not a disease. You can’t catch it from someone. You don’t need to wear a mask to be around them. It merely requires some human decency, compassion, education, and a lot of love to make them ok.

Did you know Vincent van Gogh was diagnosed posthumously with Bipolar Disorder? Today is his birthday, so March 30th has been designated as World Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day. Many BRILLIANT people struggle with their Mental Health. Most struggle because of the stigma (due to our ignorance surrounding this topic).

Please take a moment to educate yourself today about Mental Illness and Mental Health. If you know someone who appears a little “different”, try sharing something positive about them...with them today. It might just be what you BOTH need!
