Fight, flight, and freeze are familiar instinctive responses to stress, fear, or danger. You take your three and five-year-old children to the park. They see a potential playmate and beg to run over to ask them to play. You say yes, and off they run. Soon they are walking back, saying those kids said something mean about their skin color. One of those instinctive responses is activated and the look on your child's face breaks your heart.
