Utah Osprey Project

Huge thanks to Rocky Mountain Power and Cache Valley Electric for their help today cleaning osprey nests in the Echo/Coalville areas. We cleaned nearly a dozen nests and found a few new ones. These cleanings help tremendously to prevent osprey entanglements & issues with the trash they bring to the nest. If you are aware of any osprey nests in Utah with significant amounts of debris, please let us know!

Unfortunately the ospreys on the Wasatch County Parks & Recreation live camera decided to bring in a large piece of bailing twine just as the chicks are getting big! Indestructible plastic rope and big baby osprey feet can quickly become a tangled mess.

This is a big part of our work, removing this hazardous material from nests & the ground around them. Soon we will be launching an effort to work with Utah's farmers as well, to promote the removal of this dangerous debris!

Part of our work involves tracking Osprey nests in order to monitor them for issues with bailing twine or emergencies. We also can see where there are hotspots, and where there might be opportunities for building more nest platforms.

Interesting we have yet to find or hear of any nests in the lower 2/3 of the state. If you happen to know of any, please let us know! 🙏

Super excited to see the Wasatch Parks and Rec Osprey cam is live! We ran into Director Baker last fall and talked about the idea of a camera. We sent him some info and they moved quickly to get a camera up! To our knowledge, this is the only live osprey nest camera in the state of Utah. Another one will be coming online at the nearby Deer Creek High School, home of the riverhawks :)
