Jake began his guitar studies after his dad took him to a classical guitar recital at a local church at age 10. He found a great love for the instrument and developed the discipline to seriously study the guitar. His high school teachers gave Jake opportunities to perform with the choir and chamber orchestra. Before serving an LDS mission, Jake was also able to briefly begin teaching for the Modern School of Music.
He graduated from Utah State University with BM in Guitar Performance, under the tutelage of master guitarists, Michael and Corey Christiansen. While a part of the guitar program, Jake participated and performed with every ensemble featuring guitar, covering every major music genre.
Due to shortage of bass players in the USU jazz program, Jake was approached by his jazz ensemble director and asked to play bass for the jazz ensemble. He then learned to play electric and upright bass.
Jake has developed a sound understanding of the guitar, including music theory and all styles of music including rock, pop, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and classical. He has taught all ages of students in all styles. He has experience with group guitar instruction, ensembles, and private lessons. He has also taught for the Utah School of Music, the USU Guitar Department, and now enjoys teaching privately in Utah Valley.
Jake plays occasional gigs with other musicians at various locations including restaurants and weddings. He absolutely loves working with people and has seen the benefits of musical instruction with individuals. Most rewardingly, he has personally watched youth with self-esteem challenges transform into confident young men and women, due in part, to developing skills and discipline through music lessons.
Jake takes his profession seriously. He values each individual he works with and wants to help them learn the instrument, enjoy opportunities to perform and share their talents, and have fun playing music on the guitar. Overall, Jake has a passion for music, which fuels his motivation to continually study and learn as a musician.
If you are looking for a quality teacher who will take an interest in your life and help you to grow as a musician, Jake would love to work with you.
