Bare soil is begging to be covered with something.

The soil in Picture 1 has been overgrazed over the last two years and is in need of some intense regeneration. But even in damaged soil, there is always opportunity.

It’s fascinating to see what germinates first in soil like this. The plants coming up here tend to be deep- and large-rooted—plants that can reach into the earth.

Picture 2 is just beyond the fence line: diverse edibles mixed with soil healing natives.

We learn from our mistakes and try to work with nature and not in opposition to her.

Had a great day hanging out with the Lincoln University Horticulture Program and the amazing farmers, growers, and people who attended the Southwest Farmers & Producers Conference!

It was inspiring to hear presentations from Fair Share Farm - Community Supported Agriculture and Raw Roots Turmeric LLC and to learn from others who are doing great work in Regenerative Agriculture and local food.

Definitely left the conference feeling encouraged, inspired, and excited about the future of Missouri farming.

Today we’re making Tomato Fermented Plant Juice and Pokew**d Fermented Plant Juice!

We had to cut these two plants today, which means we get to capture the nutrients they’ve accumulated and turn them into a natural resource for the garden. 🌿

🌱 Garden Bed Transformation — Before & After

For this project, we focused on cleaning up the existing bed while improving the soil and creating a better foundation for the plants already growing there.

Here’s what we did:

🌿 Removed the w**ds — including invasive ground covers like purple creeper
🌱 Aerated the existing soil to improve air, water, and root movement
🍂 Added a layer of compost & compost tea to feed the soil biology
🛡️ Installed a new w**d barrier to help keep unwanted growth under control
🌳 Finished with a fresh layer of mulch to protect the soil and give the bed a clean, finished look

We had a microscopy test performed on our worm castings last week, and the results are in! 🔬🪱🌱

One thing you can expect is a HUGE population of beneficial nematodes — approximately 2,700 per gram. That's a lot of tiny helpers working beneath the surface.
