A new MMORPG exclusively for Role-Players coming Spring 2027 by Opulent Code.

You log in ready to write, and the world feels empty. The square's quiet, the tavern's quiet, and you spend twenty minutes wandering in hopes of stumbling into a scene that isn't there. Everyone who was online an hour ago is already gone, and you have no way of knowing where they went or when they'll be back.
Grimmloch's Active Scenes window fixes that. It shows you where players are actually gathering right now, live, as it happens, so you can walk straight into something already in motion instead of hunting for it. Planning ahead instead? Post your own event, a tavern night, a trial, a festival, so people can show up on purpose instead of just getting lucky.
You shouldn't have to guess where the story is happening. Now you don't.

🎉 1,000 Steam wishlists! 🎉
Our community's been more or less continuous for 25 years now, moving from platform to platform, shaping each one as best we could into the world we actually wanted to play in. We waited a long time, more than twenty years, for someone to finally build the right one. Eventually our founders stopped waiting and built it themselves: a living world that responds to your individual story, where those stories weave together into something bigger, where you can talk to an NPC the way you'd talk to another player and get something real back.
From day one, the attitude was simple: if other people want to come play too, wonderful. If not, our community finally has a proper home either way.
We're still about six months out from early access. And a thousand people who aren't just us have looked at what we're building and said yes, they want in too.
Grimmloch's Early Access launches February 15, 2027 on Steam. Alpha testing is underway right now, and our Discord is where you can be part of shaping the world before it opens to everyone else: https://discord.gg/UnyWhJjx8b
Thank you for believing in this, even before it's finished. We see every one of you.

Tired of trudging through hundreds of hours of someone else's pre-written story before you can finally get to the roleplaying?
Yeah. Us too.
In Grimmloch, you don't have to finish the game before you get to make your own story.
Roleplay is the entire point, from the moment you arrive.
Built from the ground up, by roleplayers, for roleplayers.

💻 Dev Update 💻
The World Grew Up
Just over 260 commits landed in this stretch, and the biggest piece of it was a ground-up rebuild of how the world itself works. The old system painted locations as flat tiles. The new one gives every place real extent, real memory of what happened there (only what was genuinely witnessed, not omniscient knowledge), and objects that live in the world instead of an abstract list. The server always knows what place you're in, and the client always knows what you're near. That split sounds small, but it's the backbone that lets us keep pouring in content without the old model buckling.
Built directly on top of that: you can go inside buildings now. Real doors, a prompt at the threshold, an actual enter-and-exit flow, interior lighting that tracks the sun and doesn't leak light out at night, and NPCs who live in a room actually walking into it on their own. Shops, homes, and workplaces stopped being scenery and started being places.
The world also got weather and a real calendar. The server decides the weather for everyone, so you'll all be standing in the same rain or snow together, and there are twelve real months and seasons tracked with the year shown on your status bar. Building the calendar surfaced a genuinely funny bug in the process: every character's natal chart had been getting calculated as if they were born in January, no matter their real birthday. Since astrology is core to a Grimmloch character, that's now fixed and your birth chart reads correctly.
Movement got rebuilt too, and this one killed the stutter you may have felt. NPCs now walk at their own pace instead of one universal speed, and they walk to a building's actual door instead of its center point. Digging into it, we found the world's navigation mesh, the invisible surface everything walks on, was silently broken into over sixteen thousand disconnected pieces. It's been rejoined, rebuilt to include the new interiors, and tuned. You won't see any of that directly, but it's what makes everything above actually trustworthy.
Smaller but satisfying: the roleplay log now has dated dividers and a "New Session" marker, a bug that bled one character's log into the next character's log on switch is fixed, and NPCs stop tracking players who've already logged off.

Grimmloch Lore: The Waking World
The year is 4305 and Valdara is a unified kingdom. Tsarigrad’s soaring marble basilicas and textile mills in the east, Karlingrad’s workshops and ceremonial knights in the west, Ikosium’s shrines and spice markets on the southern coast. Steam-driven looms are replacing hand work, and the first continental railway is under construction. The aristocracy holds the land. The middle class runs the workshops and the working poor grind through days that blur together. The Faith marks birth, marriage, and death but increasingly feels like ritual without substance.
This is the world every dreamer comes from, but not every dreamer comes from the same place within it, and the difference matters for how they will experience Grimmloch.
Some dreamers grow up in allodial regions, where the folk tradition still runs in unbroken lines from ancestor to child, where the names of the local spirits are common knowledge and protocols are still observed. A dreamer from Wendland, Skania, or Numidia crosses into Grimmloch and discovers that the stories their families told are real.
Other dreamers come from the kingdom’s cities - Tsarigrad, Karlingrad, and Ikosium - where industrialization and centralized culture have severed people from the traditions their families once believed but no longer do. A dreamer from the Valdaran cities crosses into Grimmloch carrying longing for something that is missing.
Both paths lead to the Gates of Horn and Ivory. The difference is whether they arrive recognizing what they find or learning what they lost and can reclaim.

Love TTRPGs? Hate trying to schedule them?
You finally found a night everyone can play.
Then somebody gets called into work.
Somebody's kid gets sick.
Somebody has family plans.
Somebody simply can't do Thursday anymore.
"How's everyone looking next week?"
Your weekly campaign becomes monthly.
Then every six weeks.
Then eventually someone says, "We really need to get the group back together."
We know. We've been there.
So we built the kind of roleplaying world we wished existed when nobody could make game night.
One of our early testers described Grimmloch as less like an MMORPG and more like a vast, hundreds-of-players TTRPG campaign that's always there.
That's pretty darn close to what we were going for.
Create a character, not a build. Make choices the world remembers. Improvise solutions instead of choosing from a list of predetermined options. Find other roleplayers and stumble into stories together, or simply follow your own character's life for a while. Log in for twenty minutes or disappear into the world for an evening.
The campaign is always there.
No coordinating five schedules - play together when you can.
No canceled session because one person couldn't make it.
No waiting three weeks to find out what happens next.
We're not trying to replace your tabletop campaign.
We're building somewhere to go when you wish you could play one.

💻 Dev Update 💻
Version 0.4.0 landed this sprint, with clients now required to match the server version so an out-of-date client can't connect to a newer world.
Alongside it, a sustained push made the shipped world reliable and consistent between the studio and the live server. The tools that convert authored content were rebuilt, a validator now checks the whole content set and blocks a bad build, and publishing is blocked unless the world's locations are actually present. A broken or empty world can't quietly slip out anymore.
On the world-building side, the town of Bukenstrand reached its full location roster of 23 authored places. Each NPC's specific body and pronouns were wired through the import pipeline, fixing a report where a visibly male NPC was describing itself as female. That pipeline is still being verified end to end, and getting it fully confirmed is the next step.
Character creation's long redesign hit its major milestones this sprint: the state-tracking rebuild, the natal chart entry point, and the redesign sign-off. A player's chosen portrait framing now follows them correctly across every window instead of drifting between screens. And the world has ambient sound from the moment you arrive, fixing a case where sound only kicked in after moving the camera.

Kickstarter Marketing Consultant
We are looking for a experienced consultant for 10 hours a month to direct our pre-launch campaign strategy for our Kickstarter. We have the staff to do the legwork - what we need is someone who can tell us what needs to get done and when and where to do it.
Given the unusual nature of our game, I’m looking for someone who has a track record with tabletop games rather than RPGs.
Grimmloch has been best described as a “massive single campaign VTTRPG with on staff game masters set in a living folklore world.”
Ideally, we would like someone who is a role player themselves. If you have a referral please help connect us.
Links to our Discord website and Steam page are in the first post.

💻 Dev Update 💻
Earliest stages of playtesting have begun!
The past two weeks were focused on one goal: getting a real, installable build into testers' hands and keeping it running. 158 commits landed, the version moved from 0.2.0 to 0.3.10 across roughly ten releases, and the first playtest is now actively underway, with tester-reported bugs already being filed and fixed in real time.
The biggest pieces: a full automated release pipeline that turns a version bump into a Steam update with no one touching a build machine by hand, a complete operator console and live server monitoring system so the team can watch the world's health and manage it without stopping the game, and a significant hardening pass to make the build actually launch cleanly on Windows, Mac, and Linux on real, varied hardware. Players on all three platforms get a properly signed build that doesn't trip "unidentified developer" warnings.
On the world side, NPC relationships now cool at a more realistic pace, the intent parser handles normal punctuation without stumbling, and Buyan, the second location beyond Bukenstrand, is taking visible shape with foliage and buildings that actually get out of the camera's way. The world has ambient sound from the moment you arrive now too, which sounds small and is not.
