Before harvest starts, I’ve had a lot of fun traveling to meet other apple & pear growers! This time I was in Michigan, @em.kropf and her family hosted me and I had the best time 🤩 Michigan is a bit different than Washington when it comes to growing conditions. For instance, they get a lot more moisture, and overall moody weather being so close to the Great Lakes. ⛈️ Because of this, they have more of a hail threat for a wider window than us in WA. Kim & Chris Kropf decided to invest in a hail cannon do to the persistence of hail out there and the absolute carnage hail can have on a crop. Ok so what does a hail cannon do? From my understanding, they send big sound waves into the atmosphere which attempt to disrupt the formation of hailstones. These, depending on the size & stage the fruit is in, can dimple or CUT the fruit.☹️ The multi-generational orchardists say they’ve had good success with the tool!
