Step 5: Adjusting to Other Work
If you're unable to perform past relevant work, SSA reviews your age, education, work history, and transferable skills to determine if you may be able to adjust to other types of employment.
As you can see, there is a lot involved in not only applying for disability benefits but in the decision making process. If you are considering beginning a claim, your next best step is to contact the legal team at Parmele Disability Advocates. Call us to schedule your no-cost consultation: 866-815-5244. Together we'll review your situation, answer your questions and help determine your next best steps.

Step 4: Past Relevant Work
In this step of the disability determination process, SSA reviews your work history and the jobs you held prior to when your disability began impacting your ability to work. The idea is to assess your residual functional capacity (RFC) to determine if your condition prevents you from performing the work you were able to in the past.
Step 3: Listings
The third item reviewed by SSA in the disability determination process is Listings. The Social Security Administration looks to find out if your condition matches or is medically equal to a specific impairment in their Listing of Impairments, also known as 'The Blue Book.'
Step 2: Severe Medical Impairments
In the disability determination process, the second item reviewed by SSA involves severe medical impairments. Regardless of diagnoses, the medical condition or impairment must significantly limit your ability to perform basic work-related activities.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines disability through a rigorous five-step sequential evaluation process. Let's take a look at this process.
Step 1: The first item SSA reviews in the five-step process is SGA or Substantial Gainful Activity. Are you working? If you are engaging in "Substantial Gainful Activity" or earning income beyond the threshold mandated by SSA, you are generally not considered disabled under SSA guidelines.

FACES BEHIND THE FIGHT FOR VETERANS: Ashley Baine
Ashley has been with Parmele for 23 years. He attended Missouri Southern State University in Joplin for his undergraduate degree and the University of Missouri School of Law. If he had not studied law, Ashley says he would have been an FBI agent. In his spare time, Ashley enjoys reading, puzzles, crossword puzzles, playing golf, going to baseball games and amusement parks.
When asked what he enjoys most about working on our VA team, Ashley shared, “I’ve worked in VA disability for 3 years now. The best part is when we can help a veteran get VA benefits that has been fighting for them for years. It is satisfying no matter the situation but those are the ones that feel special.”
Ashley is just one of the qualified, experienced VA-ACCREDITED attorneys at Parmele Disability Advocates. If you are a veteran or know a veteran who needs assistance with a claim, or if you simply have questions, call us to schedule a no-cost consultation: 866-841-7459. Together, we’ll review your situation, answer your questions and help determine your next best steps.
