The UIS Department of Public Administration invite you to attend the Rail Splitter Banquet Awards Ceremony and Research Summit on March 16 and March 17 in the Student Union Ballroom.

The events on March 16 consist of a banquet and an awards ceremony, both of which will celebrate the importance of public service and the excellent work being conducted by our past and current students. Our featured speaker will be Dr. Mary Guy, one of the most prominent PA scholars in PA’s history .

The first is the Rail Splitter Award, which will be awarded through support of the Springfield area’s local chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), and that recognizes someone local doing exceptional work in advancing public service. The second will be awarded to a distinguished past graduate of the program. The events on March 17 (3:30-8:30pm) will consist of a research summit. We will invite current and past students of the PA program to present their research and compete for Best Paper and Best Presentation award. Dr. Guy will be the chief adjudicator and will also make remarks on the importance of research.

Now Accepting Nominations for 2020 “Rail Splitter” Public Service Award

The Central Illinois Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) is now accepting nominations for its prestigious Rail Splitter Public Service Award. This award pays tribute to a public servant (in government or in the not-for-profit sector) whose career exhibits the highest standard of excellence, dedication, and accomplishment. Nominations for the award must be submitted by February 15, 2020.

CRITERIA: This award is presented annually to an individual who has spent a primary portion of their career working in public service, made outstanding contributions on a sustained basis rather than having performed a single exceptional deed, and accomplished or caused to be accomplished significant programs or projects within their areas of responsibility to the ultimate benefit of the general public.

ELIGIBILITY: Nominations are solicited from the public as well as the entire public service community, and are not limited to ASPA members. All nominations are encouraged. Nominations may be made as follows.

NOMINATIONS: Nominations must be submitted by email to [email protected] no later than February 15, 2020. Nominations must include:
 The nominee’s name.
 The nominee’s organization or agency, if associated with one.
 An explanation as to why the nominee is deserving of the award based upon the criteria provided above.
 The name and contact information (phone and email address) for the nominator so that they may be contacted if there is a need for further information.

The award will be presented at an event at the University of Illinois Springfield on March 16, 2020.

The UIS Department of Public Administration is hosting a film viewing in partnership with the Central Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Public Administrators and the Central Illinois Nonprofit Resource Center. We’ll be showing the documentary ‘What is Philanthropy?’ Following the film, we will video chat with film producer, Salvatore Alaimo. Join us on October 3, 6:00-8:30 PM in the UIS Brookens Auditorium. This is a free event open to students, staff, faculty, and community members.

About the film: Philanthropy is synonymous with American history, principles, and culture; yet it remains an evolving and largely misunderstood topic. What Is Philanthropy? is a feature length documentary that portrays and discusses the concept of giving within the American context through a critical lens and a variety of perspective. This screening is hosted by the UIS Department of Public Administration in partnership with the Central Illinois Nonprofit Resource Center and Central Illinois ASPA.

October 11th, the UIS College of Public Affairs and Administration will be hosting its first community-oriented summit, Evaluation Practice: Assessment, Accountability, and Sustainability. The audience will include members of the local nonprofit community, state and local governments, and students from a variety of disciplines.
