Some individuals have occasionally judged me for my profession, stating that I will never amount to anything because my audience consists solely of addicts. They have also criticized my educational background and language skills. Nevertheless, I consider myself profoundly blessed. I have the privilege of working with a community that has been marginalized, judged, and condemned without being given the opportunity to understand and empathize. This community comprises remarkable and gifted individuals who are struggling and require compassion. Regardless of their sobriety, we all benefit from moments of respite and understanding.

Addiction (Behavioral): A chronic disease characterized by compulsive drug-seeking behavior and loss of control over usage.
Key Distinction: One can be dependent on a medication (like blood pressure medication or antidepressants) without being addicted to it. Addiction is often characterized by the inability to stop despite severe consequences (e.g., job loss, broken relationships).

Why the Difference Matters
Confusing the two can lead to stigma and improper treatment. Dependence often requires a medical detox and careful tapering of a substance under a doctor's care, whereas addiction requires comprehensive, often long-term, psychological and behavioral therapy.
