Welcome to the main campaign page for Springfield School Board Position 4

I had a chance to work with Lee, teaching some high schoolers some basic carpentry skills. Lee’s passion for teaching CTE was apparent the moment I stepped in the classroom. Great guy, great program and great opportunity for Oregon High Schoolers!

It was a close one! Unfortunately we fell just short of the goal, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. The support and enthusiastic volunteerism was nothing short of amazing to see. I want to thank everyone that was involved in any way with this campaign. You all are awesome and passionate people who care about your community and I sincerely thank you for your efforts. I live in Springfield, I’m raising my children and a grandchild in Springfield and I’m not going anywhere. We still have work to do and this outcome doesn’t change that. I will continue to work to improve our community and increase access to apprenticeships. Thank you all for your continued support.

I’m spending the day at Lane Community College helping instruct and inform high school juniors and seniors from across Oregon at the Youth Trades Academy. Sharing my experience and knowledge of what it means to be a union carpenter and what a career in the trades can do for them. It’s awesome to see the interest and excitement from these students about the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

“This Academy is open to all Lane County students who are participating in our BOLI-approved Lane pre-apprenticeship program. LanePact.

These students are looking to expand their knowledge in the trades with extended hands-on experiences.”

Attendance Services / Migrant Education Services 05/09/2023

While I did go to last nights meeting to speak about public comment, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the large group of people that showed up in solidarity to speak about a specific need they are facing in their community. Many folx from the Latin/a/o/x community showed up to speak during public comment about the need for transportation support for the summer migrant education services program. Most of the speakers shared how valuable they find the program to be for many reasons, but the preservation of their culture and language seemed to be the main theme. After the public comment portion of the meeting Superintendent Todd Hamilton addressed the group outside of the board room and assured them he would help get transportation. If you are not familiar with Springfield Public Schools Migrant Education Services you can read more about it below.

Attendance Services / Migrant Education Services To qualify for the Migrant Education Program, a migrant child must have moved within the past three years across state or school district lines with a migrant parent or guardian to enable the child, the child’s guardian, or a member of the child’s immediate family to obtain temporary or seasonal...

Springfield School Board Meeting - 05/08/2023 05/09/2023

Edit: 1:18:55 for Public Comment Discussion

At last nights school board meeting the discussion topic was “Public Comment Process Review”. This was presented by the superintendent and he framed it as “trying to figure out what the problem is”. Part way through the presentation one of the Directors stopped the superintendent and asked why he was going through all of the policy when we clearly already know what the problem is: community members want to be able to sign up in person to speak the night of the meeting and can’t due to pandemic era protocols that have not been removed. Although that director tried as she might to explain this simple problem, the chair, vice chair and superintendent repeatedly threw up confusing and unnecessary roadblocks. At one point the chair said that she hasn’t heard from anyone that hasn’t been able to speak in person at the meeting so it isn’t really a problem. 🤔 ❓It’s unfortunate that two of the five board members were missing as I’m certain at least one of them would have been able to help bring some sense of clarity to the charade. It seems simple enough: let people sign up in person and if there's too many people then listen to as many as you can. The public are smart enough to figure it out despite the superintendent’s assertion that different cutoff times would be too confusing. No protocol was changed last night, but hopefully in the near future the board as a whole will find the value in allowing in person sign ups for public comment.
