π½π The latest USDA WASDE report is sending mixed signals across grain markets β and NC growers need to stay sharp heading into summer.
Key takeaways for North Carolina grain producers:
β’ Corn supplies remain large, keeping pressure on prices despite strong export demand
β’ Soybean outlook is mixed with stronger crush demand but continued South American competition
β’ Wheat markets found support from tightening production concerns and weather stress in key regions
For NC farmers, this means:
β
Marketing discipline matters more than ever
β
Storage and basis opportunities could become critical
β
Weather premiums may drive volatility through planting and pollination season
Bottom line: margins may stay tight, but volatility creates opportunity for growers who stay proactive with risk management and marketing plans.

π½π USDA March 31 Planting Intentions + Grain Stocks β What it means on the farm
Planting intentions (2026):
β’ Corn: 95.3M acres (β 3% from last year)
β’ Soybeans: 84.7M acres (β 4%)
β’ Wheat: 43.8M acres (β 3%)
β‘οΈ Takeaway: nationwide shift away from corn and wheat toward soybeans again this spring.
Grain stocks as of March 1:
β’ Corn: 9.02B bu (β 11% vs last year)
β’ Soybeans: 2.10B bu (β 10%)
β’ Wheat: 1.30B bu (β 5%)
β‘οΈ Takeaway: still plenty of grain in storage across the system.
What this likely means locally:
β’ Corn acres tightening some nationwide, but still large overall supply
β’ Bean acres expanding again
β’ Big on-farm stocks show many producers are still holding grain
β’ Weather + June acreage report will matter more from here
Next big USDA acreage update: late June.

π§ 1) Lock in supply FIRST, price second
Availability may become a bigger problem than cost.
Dealers may ration tons, Imports are disrupted, Spring demand is peaking
Up to 40% cost increases and actual shortages are already being reported in the U.S.
βοΈ 2) Donβt cut nitrogen blindly
Reducing N to βsave moneyβ can cost more in yield loss.
Nitrogen shortages threaten yields because itβs the most yield-limiting nutrient.
Better approach: optimize, not slash.
β Soil test + realistic yield goal
β Account for residual N
β Use variable-rate if possible
β Time applications to reduce losses
π§ 3) Split applications to stretch supply
Especially effective in NCβs sandy Coastal Plain soils.
Instead of one heavy shot:
β‘οΈ Preplant + sidedress
β‘οΈ Apply closer to peak uptake
β‘οΈ Reduce leaching risk
This improves efficiency and may allow slightly lower total N without yield loss.
π§ͺ 4) Use stabilizers or enhanced-efficiency products
If N is expensive, protect every pound.
These help prevent:
Volatilization
Leaching
Denitrification
Higher cost per ton β but cheaper than losing N you already paid for.
π± 5) Consider crop adjustments (if still possible)
Some growers nationwide are shifting away from high-N crops.
Legumes need far less synthetic nitrogen because they fix atmospheric N.
In Eastern NC context:
Soybeans = lowest N requirement
Peanuts = moderate (but Ca/K heavy)
Corn/Tobacco = high N
π¦ 6) Secure logistics early
Even if fertilizer exists, it may not arrive on time. The war disrupted shipping through a route carrying about one-third of global fertilizer trade.
Expect:
Delivery delays
Trucking shortages
Terminal bottlenecks
