Encounters like this usually happen when we’re paddling quietly and giving wildlife plenty of space. Dolphins are naturally curious, and sometimes that curiosity brings them close for a quick look.

Manatees are some of the gentlest, most magical creatures in our waters, and it’s easy to think that getting close, even touching them, is a way to show love. But here’s the thing: even gentle touches can stress them out.

Just because something is “legal” doesn’t always mean it’s best for the animal. Manatees can’t ask for pets or tell us when they’re uncomfortable, so it’s up to us to protect them.

Had we tried to pet this mom or her calf we could put the calf at serious risk of being separated from their mom.

We totally get why swimming with manatees sounds amazing, they’re such gentle, incredible animals, and it’s easy to see why that would be tempting to be up close to a wild animal. The reason we stick to kayaks is all about keeping them safe and stress-free. Even in places like Crystal River, the only place it’s legal under strict supervision. touching or approaching manatees can interrupt their natural behaviors and put them at risk of harm.

The most ethical way to experience these incredible animals? Stay in your kayak, give them plenty of space, and let them choose how close they want to come. By observing without disturbing, we’re keeping them safe, healthy, and stress-free and helping ensure these amazing creatures thrive for generations to come.
