❓Picky Eaters vs. PFD vs. ARFID❓
Join Kay A. Toomey, PhD for an online workshop about picky eating, PFD, and ARFID. By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
🔘Define the characteristics of a “picky eater” as different from either PFD or ARFID.
🔘Evaluate the validity of the criteria for ARFID.
🔘Identify critical components of a differential diagnosis decision tree for picky eaters vs. PFD vs ARFID.
The online workshop is accessible on-demand now and is FREE for families and students! To access the workshop and view healthcare professional pricing, click here: https://bit.ly/3f3REnZ
On this Christmas, this food-centered holiday, please remember the children who don’t eat, who won’t eat, who nibble, who lick, who avoid the dinner table altogether, who eat with a tube in their nose or their ‘button’, who eat only mashed potatoes, or who eat through a straw— they are not being difficult. They are not being manipulative. They have pediatric feeding disorder. Please respect them and their abilities. Show their parents and caregivers grace and love —everyone is doing their very best.
And please remember there are many ways to celebrate and enjoy one another, with and without food.
We posted this message last month on Thanksgiving and received requests from international members of the PFD community who don't celebrate American Thanksgiving to share this same note for Christmas. 🎄
🍊My strategy for helping kids deal with “new food smells” is so simple & so effective! Many picky eaters
complain about the smell of new foods. But the solution is not to stop serving the food. The solution is
to offer a strategy to help them manage the sensation.
🍋Pick a slice of citrus fruit that your child enjoys. They don’t have enjoy eating it, but they do enjoy the aroma. If they are too sensitive to fruity smells, try a piece of washcloth damped with water (cut to size with scissors) with a few drops of essential oil in a light fragrance they enjoy.
🥤Spear the straw through the citrus slice (or the tiny square of washcloth) & let it rest on the lid.
🧊Ice water works best, if your child is ok drinking very cold water.
🤔Why does this work? Molecules containing the aroma of the new food travel through the air & reach the olfactory center of the brain when they travel up the nose with each breath. The aromatic
molecules from the citrus travel up the nose as the child sips through the straw, masking any previous
odors that your child may find uncomfortable. The cold sips of water help to desensitize the throat,
where smells also hang out!
🍲So, kids still get small whiffs of the new foods just because they are present on the table. The small sips of cold water, paired with a pleasant smell, counterbalances the
less desirable sensations from the new food.
🥰The beauty is, they learn to tolerate the “new food smells” over time while still being exposed to new foods and their unique aromas. That’s the key to helping kids learn to interact with new foods with all
of their senses – tiny, manageable exposures instead of avoiding the foods altogether.
🪄Compassionate exposures with positive strategies to support our hesitant eaters…that’s when the magic happens to help kids become more adventurous eaters.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is when a person has particular difficulties with understanding and using spoken language. The particular difficulties with language vary enormously between different people with DLD.
People with DLD might have difficulty with talking, such as thinking of the right words or putting the words into sentences. Complex sentences, which is when two shorter sentences are combined together, are often particularly difficult.
Less obvious are when people with DLD are struggling to understand. It might be that the sentences are too long and complex, or that the vocabulary in unfamiliar. Or as this image shows it can be when words have more than one meaning or be about linking bigger chunks together and understanding what is not directly said.

BILINGUAL KIDS - MYTH vs FACT
Did you know that the vestibular system is responsible to tell you where you are in space relative to gravity? It helps you balance, and it helps you see things clearly when you move your head and body. But this can be disrupted or underdeveloped in young kids for a number of reasons, for example: multiple ear infections, hearing loss and cochlear implants, concussion/head injury, chemotherapy etc., just to name a few. This can delay or limit skills in sitting, standing, walking, running, stair negotiation, jumping and it can result in decreased ability to participate in play and sports safely.
Our Physical Therapist, Tejaswi Khadka, PT, DPT, NCS has had special training and expertise in identifying and treating the pediatric population (infants to adolescents) presenting with postural, balance, and coordination impairments associated with developmental and vestibular impairment. She evaluates and treats individuals with post-concussion syndrome and helps them return back to sports and daily life. Find more information and to schedule an appointment for a formal evaluation visit www.Kitestringstherapy.com, or reach out via phone at 512-261-3584 or email [email protected]."
