The rescue world is one big family. We are here for the animals that need us. Earlier today we had an emergency notice of 4 pups in need, dumped and left to fend for themselves. We weren’t able to get them by noon so we reached out to fellow rescuers who we thought could possibly help. And help they did! Thank you Vicki and Laura from Halifax Dog Squad, Inc. for picking up these helpless pups and getting them the vet care and love they so desperately need. #ittakesavillage

THIS BOY CAN BE ADOPTED OR RESCUED Guilford County Animal Services Transfer Partners! PLEASE CONACT [email protected] OR Christi Florio IsleyFOR INFORMATION!
The rescue community is one big family. We all have the same goal, saving lives and finding happily ever after for dogs, cats, or whatever animals a group saves. We are extremely blessed at Vintage Racers to have extraordinary support and we are happy to help other groups in need of supplies, food, etc. We recently received more goodies from Beth Tuttle, Beth Kinney and Barbara Chickosky and will be using those supplies for our fosters. (Even though Snowball thinks the puppy pads are a new cat tower). But we also recently received a tremendous amount of dog food from Gordon Steffens at
Performance Plus Global Logistics and Be Like Henry. One of our local groups, Halifax Dog Squad, Inc. was in need of dog food and of course we said YES! They sent over some young strong volunteers to load up a truck! We know their dozens of dogs in foster care are happy today! We recently learned the Martinsville shelter is in need of food and will be reaching out to them today. Thanks to donations we have plenty to share. #ittakesavillage
Partnerships, in everyday life and in rescue are critical. No one person can do everything and no one rescue can do everything. I am so grateful for our many partners and Rory’s story, formerly Anna, is one where working with partners was awesome. You see Rory was returned when her family could no longer care for her due to losing their home as a financial result of COVID-19. Her foster mom wasn’t able to take her back in so she went to Halifax Dog Squad, Inc. who had space for this lovely lady. They loved her immediately! Who wouldn’t? Then our mutual northern partner PetConnect Rescue found Rory a home. An awesome furever home! Thank you Vicki, Laura and Randi! #teamwork #partnership #ittakesavillage
Say hello to stunning 11 month old Royal. Royal was adopted as a puppy when her name was Anna. Sadly her family can no longer care for her and she was returned to the rescue. Lucky for her she is already feeling so much love. We picked her up this morning from Roxboro Animal Hospital and now she is hanging out with Vicki and Laura of Halifax Dog Squad, Inc. since our foster homes are full. We are very grateful for their help. Royal loves all her new dog friends and all the space she has to run and play. Halifax Dog Squad is also building an amazing new facility for the hundreds of dogs they rescue each year. Follow their page and help with this new facility if you can! These ladies work nonstop 24/7 to save lives.

Brutal, frigid weather ahead. Please be on the lookout for animals not being protected. If it is too cold for you it is too cold for them AND it is against Virginia law to NOT bring them inside during extreme weather. Many will die from hypothermia. If you know of someone who leaves their animals out without proper protection all the time then you know they will not take them in during this brutal weather.
Please SHARE and report abuse before it is too late.

Great Advice to follow.

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Cold weather is here. Virginia Law requires you to bring your dog inside when it is below freezing. Make sure your neighbors do the same or report them to Animal Control. If it is too cold for you, it is too cold for them AND it is against the law.

12/29/2021

Time to adopt? Don't shop. Visit our local shelter or contact The Halifax Dog Squad. If you're not sure, foster one of our dogs. They come with food & vet care, you provide a safe loving home.

Once I was a lonely dog,
Just looking for a home.
I had no place to go,
No one to call my own.
I wandered up and down the streets,
in rain in heat and snow.
I ate what ever I could find,
I was always on the go.
My skin would itch, my feet were sore,
My body ached with pain.
And no one stopped to give a pat
Or to gently say my name.
I never saw a loving glance,
I was always on the run.
For people thought that hurting me
was really lots of fun.
And then one day I heard a voice
So gentle, kind and sweet,
And arms so soft reached down to me
And took me off my feet.
"No one again will hurt you"
Was whispered in my ear.
"You'll have a home to call your own
where you will know no fear."
"You will be dry, you will be warm,
you'll have enough to eat
And rest assured that when you sleep,
your dreams will all be sweet."
I was afraid I must admit,
I've lived so long in fear.
I can't remember when I let
A human come so near.
And as she tended to my wounds
And bathed and brushed my fur
She told me 'bout the rescue group
And what it meant to her.
She said, "We are a circle,
A line that never ends.
And in the center there is you
protected by new friends."
"And all around you are
the ones that check the pounds,
And those that share their home
after you've been found."
"And all the other folk
are searching near and far.
To find the perfect home for you,
where you can be a star."
She said, "There is a family,
that's waiting patiently,
and pretty soon we'll find them,
just you wait and see."
"And then they'll join our circle
they'll help to make it grow,
so there'll be room for more like you,
who have no place to go."
I waited very patiently,
The days they came and went.
Today's the day I thought,
my family will be sent.
Then just when I began to think
It wasn't meant to be,
there were people standing there
just gazing down at me.
I knew them in a heart beat,
I could tell they felt it too.
They said, "We have been waiting
for a special dog like you."
Now every night I say a prayer
to all the gods that be.
"Thank you for the life I live
and all you've given me.
But most of all protect the dogs
in the pound and on the street.
And send a Rescue Person
to lift them off their feet."
