Tina Caparo spent her career designing beautiful gardens, but years of physical work took a devastating toll. Severe back pain became her constant companion, and as her discs began collapsing, she couldn't put weight on her right leg.
Everything changed when Tina met Dr. Stephen Smith at Beacon Medical Group North Central Neurosurgery. Dr. Smith knew advanced imaging technology would allow him to see exactly what was happening in her spine and plan the best surgical approach. Only that technology was in Chicago.
Beacon recently became the first hospital in northern Indiana to bring the technology to our community. The EOS Imaging System uses 85% less radiation than traditional X-rays while delivering incredibly detailed 2D and 3D images powered by AI.
Tina now walks confidently and pain-free down hospital hallways. She has another imaging appointment on her calendar, but this time no travel is required. "Dr. Smith has given me my life back,” she says.

Is your child just standing weird, or could it be scoliosis? It’s hard to tell. Here are the signs to look for, along with clues that it might be more than typical pre-teen pos-
ture. If you think your child might have signs of scoliosis, tell their provider. The sooner you identify and treat it, the less it will affect your child’s life.
Many kids with scoliosis don’t need surgery. But if a procedure is what’s best, you can count on Beacon to offer the latest minimally invasive techniques. That means smaller cuts, less pain, and quicker recovery — so your kid can get back to being a kid. Learn more about scoliosis at https://bit.ly/3FQreXK

A passion for helping others shaped the career path of Lucinda Kil Gillis, PMHNP. “While in college I purposely took a job in a nursing home while deciding on my career to gain some background, and found I loved caring for others,” she says.
In her work as a nurse, Lucinda practiced in the NICU and also taught at Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. While working on her graduate studies and staying active in nursing, she completed her doctorate degree in law with the goal of combining the two areas to focus on healthcare law and other needs of clients that intersected legal-medical needs.

When Dr. Stephen Smith and Dr. Ryan Roeder speak on the national stage about their medical device development company, one of their greatest sources of satisfaction is describing how the technology came from South Bend, and how Dr. Smith performed the first spinal fusion surgery with their novel implant at Beacon Health System.
Their product, named a Best New Spine Technology of 2023 by "Orthopedics This Week," has improved outcomes for more than 600 patients.
"To be some small part of that going forward is also part of my own hope, my own mission. It's the mission of Beacon, it's the mission of engineers at Notre Dame, it's a mission of, I think, humanity," says Dr. Smith, a neurosurgeon at Beacon Medical Group North Central Neurosurgery South Bend. "So, it's really cool to be part of that."
It's a story we first told in 2023, and now, the University of Notre Dame is also sharing their journey. Read more at https://bit.ly/3HpXotT
