Throughout the month of September, original artwork created by participating youth in foster care is being featured in 5 public displays as part of Fostering Hope's installation in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.

The artwork, created in the form of Zentangles, offers a beautiful glimpse into the creativity, expression, and talent of these young artists. If you’re in the area, please take a moment to stop by and experience their work in person — and read more about the project along the way.

A special shout-out to instructor Debbie Phelan and our incredible team for inspiring these young people and helping bring their work into the larger community. We’re so proud to see their creativity celebrated throughout Tremont! 🎨

Meet the youth artists with Fostering Hope! • The Zentangle artworks featured in restorARTive gallery boxes were created by youth ages 8-16 in residential treatment at OhioGuidestone through Fostering Hope’s Creative Collaborative program. Fostering Hope is a Northeast Ohio nonprofit that provides trauma-informed art experiences for youth in foster care and residential treatment. Through weekly classes rooted in the CASEL framework, youth explore creativity as a tool for self-expression, emotional regulation, and connection while building confidence through voice and choice. These pieces were created during a four-week series led by Fostering Hope visiting artist and Certified Zentangle Teacher Debbie Phelan. Miss Debbie introduced youth to the Zentangle Method using Apprentice Tiles, pencils, pens, black markers, and tortillons for shading and blending. Zentangle combines mindfulness and creativity, encouraging participants to embrace imperfections as opportunities rather than mistakes. Throughout the series, youth grew in both artistic skill and self-confidence, discovering that beauty can emerge from unexpected places. Perhaps most importantly, they learned that this calming, accessible art form can be created with nothing more than paper, a pencil, and a willingness to begin. We are deeply honored to have been named the recipient of many generous donations made in memory of Edward “Torchy” Smith, who passed away July 27, 2026.

His family chose to honor his legacy through memorial gifts, creating a meaningful tribute to his life and impact.
