I am a freelance wordsmith. My goal as a writer is to tell true tales in engaging ways that keep the reader pressing on for more.

I love profiling fascinating people, sharing tales of what's good or innovative in the world, and writing about my own experiences in ways that convey the commonality of human experience. As an editor, I aim to preserve my client's individual voice. I serve as a second set of eyes, making suggestions to improve the words on the page so that they most effectively convey the intended message while s

Ha! Who watched the eclipse? We didn't make it to totality, but had a great time hiking up a mountain to see great views and our 85% or so.

It's My Country Too - University of Nebraska Press 08/06/2017

I love going to readings at Politics and Prose to support folks I know. This week it was Jerri Bell & Tracy Crow, co-editors of It's My Country Too, an important book about the history of women in the armed services, told in their own words through primary sources.

I know Jerri through her great work with the Veterans Writing Project.

See the link below if you know a female veteran, are interested in military stories, or just want to support some great people!

Retire The Colors 05/26/2017

Please listen to this excellent NPR interview with Dario DiBattista (in which he kindly mentions me and my piece, among other contributors to Retire the Colors). Dario has a lot of important things to say about veterans, war, and other topics that are worth considering not only this Memorial Day weekend but always.

(And a reminder that Memorial Day is about remembering lives lost.)

An important read, and why I don't address someone's grammar/style unless I'm specifically asked.

Retire the Colors: Veterans & Civilians on Iraq & Afghanistan by Dario DiBattista | Hudson Whitman| Excelsior College Press | Hudson Whitman 04/09/2017

Had a great time at the Annapolis Book Festival yesterday - thanks for having us! Even got to sign some books. And it made my day to learn that one of my fellow panelists and co-essayists is using Retire the Colors in his class at the university where he's teaching, and students have really liked my essay. Is there a better thing for a writer to hear, that real live readers are touched by their words? :)

On Saturday I'll be reading and serving on a panel at the Annapolis Book Festival for this book, in which I have an essay thanks to Dario DiBattista. Come on by and see us if you like. There are some other great folks that are going to be there too, so check out the whole schedule online.

The Festival is hosting a panel based on the book "Retire the Colors: Veterans & Civilians on Iraq & Afghanistan." Several contributors to the book will be on hand to discuss the impacts of war that are not always visible: Dario DiBattista (editor), Colin D. Halloran, Lauren Kay Halloran, Eva KL Miller: Writer and Editor, and Stewart Moss. Go to http://bit.ly/2lA8dKJ to find out more.
