Research shows that kids who feel good about themselves have the confidence to try new things. They are more likely to try their best. They feel proud of what they can do. Self-esteem helps kids cope with mistakes. It helps kids try again, even if they fail at first. As a result, self-esteem helps kids do better at school, at home, and with friends.

The purpose of the Hattie B. BWIP Foundation is to contribute to our philanthropic efforts in our community. Our foundation will specifically support our Girls Self-Confidence Camp. This camp has been done for two years now in our community for girls aged 8-18. Acacia Barnett realized the need in her community for young girls; there are not many opportunities for young girls to focus on mental and emotional health. Self-esteem in women is something that is not always addressed, despite its importance and impact on young girls lives.
Our three-day camp offers classes taught by women in our community. Each year we have a theme for Self-Confidence Camp. This past year our camp focused on “Mind, Body, & Spirit”. We provided classes on su***de awareness, self-defense, gardening, woodworking, body knowledge and positivity, staying smart on social media, overcoming adversity, and much more. We keep up with current issues affecting our girls in order to address them at camp. Our workshops focus on social skills, real-life issues, and emphasizes self-confidence. We have found that the self-esteem of the girls who attend camp increases from the first day to the last day, especially by providing them with words of affirmation and praise. Our camp is always done the week before school to prepare them for the new school year. The first year of our camp we had 44 girls attend; our second year we nearly doubled in size to 82 girls. Next year we are expecting 150-200 girls to attend and we will also be lowering the age to start at ages 5-18. We have been featured in the local newspaper and on a news station based in Tucson, Arizona. Our camp is catching the attention of a lot of people in the community and there has been an outpour of support and help. Our goal for Girls Camp is to extend it to a week-long camp, and eventually to a full summer camp, where we can do more activities. We are working towards expanding our staff and establishing a permanent venue of our own in order to keep up with increasing numbers and availability.
