Thinking back to a brighter day on this gloomy one. Last month we had the opportunity to celebrate with longtime advocate and former board member, Ernestine Schram, as she turned 100 years old. Ernestine is near and dear to the hearts of so many at VYJ. In her honor and in recognition of her artistic talents, the Ernestine Schram Art Camp Scholarship has been established for our summer art camp. We are grateful to be part of Ernestine's story and even more so that she is such a huge part of ours.

Are you still trying to figure out your New Year’s resolution? We have a great suggestion. Become a Battle of the Gumbo Gladiators Sponsor! Here are three great reasons why.

1. Commitment is LOW! We all know resolutions are hard to stick to. This sponsorship is perfect because by mid March, you’re done. And you can have the satisfaction of saying you kept your resolution all year long!

2. Return on investment. You pick your level and enjoy all the perks of the level. BUT there’s more! Sponsorship of this event goes so much further than the event itself. Yes, it is the sponsors who make the event possible, but in turn, it makes possible the programming, classes, and furthers our opportunities to reach out and make a difference in the lives of at risk children and their families in our communities. That means CASAs (court appointed special advocates) advocating for foster kiddos. Jumpstart classes to help youth who have been or may be charged get back on the right path. Mentors for kids who need a positive and healthy influence in their lives. Help for families in need of services. Help for families struggling with truant children. There is so much more and you can be a part of it!

3. Gumbo. Plain and simple. Whatever your sponsorship level, you get tickets for samples. The best of the best in the state and beyond come to compete for the title of number one which means filling your belly with gumbo goodness for a good cause!

Are you convinced? Or even just curious? Click on over to https://gumbogladiators.com/sponsors/ and check it out.

CASA Christmas Tour 2023 is still rocking...around the Christmas tree! We had an awesome Christmas party in DeSoto Parish on Saturday, December 2nd. Thanks to Fellowship Community Church for hosting our annual Christmas party and filling each child's wishlist! We appreciate the foster parents, advocates, DCFS staff, court officials, the Grinch and Santa who came out and showed their support!

It has been said "picture is worth a thousand words," but we could write volumes with the words that would flow from these pictures. Around 300 little lives touched by countless other hundreds of individuals, churches, businesses, and schools. An army of volunteers who love, support, and advocate for these kids year round and sometimes year after year. Finally, a group of employees who continue to be completely blown away the generosity of this community and the outpouring of kindness we receive for CASA Christmas every year. We pour our own hearts into saying THANK YOU to every single person involved, from the sponsors to the donors to those of you who helped spread the word here on Facebook. We couldn't have made this happen without you. You have helped make a difference in the lives of these kids and for that, we are so thankful!

Our official builder elves were back in the toyshop yesterday! We are grateful to newly elected Senator Alan Seabaugh for State Senate and his lovely wife VYJ board member and representative for Office of the Louisiana Attorney General, Laura McClelland Seabaugh for spending their afternoon putting together bicycles for CASA Christmas. These two elves donate time and tools each year to make spirits bright for our CASA kiddos and we are so thankful!

The recently secured grant funds will help to purchase new equipment, furniture, and upgrade the refrigerator to significantly transform the meeting room environment.

In this time of year where we begin to think about the things we are most thankful for, we can't help but think of our beginnings at and current home in, First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport. Volunteers for Youth Justice began within the walls of this beautiful place of worship and has expanded far beyond what anyone could have hoped. To our founders, Carolyn W. Beaird, Marjorie B. Winkler, Lea Johnson, Babs Roggero, Pastor Dr. John Rogers, and Suzette Kincer-Haley, we hope we have and will continue to make you proud. To Rev. Scott and Rev. Pappas, Lona, Sam, Jeff, Tanna, and so many others, THANK YOU for all you do each and every day. We are so grateful for you!

11/10/2023

We thank and honor all who have served this country today and every day!
