Kathleen Jones, Outreach Coordinator for the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana, joined forces with Lindy Broderick, Chaplain and Director of the Christian Leadership Center, and Erica Johnson, Administrative Coordinator for Centenary College of Louisiana. Together, they rallied students to jump on board with the SNAP program, which could offer a helping hand to students in need that qualify. Last week, we had the chance to chat with a bunch of curious students who had no idea they were eligible for SNAP benefits. We took a deep dive into the qualifications, and they left feeling empowered.
Erica Johnson says, “We are proud to be among one of the first schools who received designation as a Hunger Free Campus. Our goals for our students include using programming to identify and bridge any gaps that may exist in regard to students being food insecure. By partnering with the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana today, we were able to make students aware of their eligibility to receive SNAP benefits.”

"Nutrients are the nourishing substances in food that are essential for the growth, development and maintenance of body functions. Essential meaning that if a nutrient is not present, aspects of function and therefore human health decline. When nutrient intake does not regularly meet the nutrient needs dictated by the cell activity, the metabolic processes slow down or even stop."

"The apple juice is my favorite," said Alexandra.
Alexandra lives with her grandfather and her five siblings. It's hard for her grandfather to afford food for all their family. His paycheck and SNAP benefits just don't cover all of their food costs. Thankfully, Alexandra is a part of the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana's Back Pack Program. Every Friday and on holidays, she gets a bag of food in her backpack to eat over the break. The food helps her stay energized until school is back in session. It always puts a smile on her face and hope in her grandfather's heart.
