Robert De Niro was born on August 1943, in New York City, into an artistic family. He began his career in the 1960s and rose to prominence with roles in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973), Mean Streets (1973), and especially The Godfather Part II (1974), which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to impress with Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980 – Best Actor Oscar), Goodfellas, Casino, Heat, The Irishman (2019), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). Beyond acting, he co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival, the global Nobu restaurant chain, and is a vocal advocate for social justice, arts education, and climate action. Q: How often did people bathe in the Old West?
A: This advertisement for $0.25 artesian baths appeared during 1885 in the Yellowstone Journal (Miles City, Montana). For most, a 25 cent bath would have cost an hour's wages or more. In 1885, few believed that cleanliness was next to godliness. A person’s cleanliness was not yet associated with moral and social standing. One source reported that in 1900 Americans averaged just 6 to 8 baths per year. Women typically washed their hair once per month. The first working-class houses with bathrooms would be built around 1900. Fewer than three percent of American homes were lit by electricity in 1900; and not many more had indoor toilets. Most of those upscale homes were larger cities.

Pvt. James William Nugent, 1900. Born in Ireland, Nugent had just celebrated his 18th birthday. He was stationed at Camp Merritt, located at Lame Deer, tribal headquarters for Montana's Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Camp Merritt was garrisoned by troops on a three-month rotation from Fort Keogh, adjacent to Miles City in eastern Montana. Nugent was in Troop F of the 1st Cavalry. Native Americans were confined to reservation lands, and could not leave without a pass.

Jim and his wife Anna started Nugent Transfer & Storage in Miles City. Until her death in 1975 at age 90, Anna owned the house at the NE corner of Pearl and Center, three blocks south of our family home. She and her husband were buried in Miles City.
