“Together”
What are some of the things we can’t do on our own but need the help of others?
As much as we would like to think we are “individuals” and “self-sufficient”, we need others for our mental and spiritual health.
In both Romans and 1 Corinthians, the apostle Paul compares the Body of Christ to a human body. So, in Christ we who are many from one body, and each member belongs to the others. Romans 12:5 In the 1st letter to the Corinthian church he remarks, if the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? God has arranged the parts of the body, everyone of them, just as he wanted them to be. Paul is reminding us that here at Hope Church, our community is both a reflection of unity and diversity. We need each other and we need everyone to use their gifts for the Body of Christ to live, serve and grow. As we move into this exciting time of transition for our church family, my prayer is that we will all remember that we have important roles and gifts we need to share with each other and our community. We can do this TOGETHER!
This Sunday, we will also share in the Lord’s Supper together, another way and expression of community for whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11: 26

LIFE IS A BATTLE! Do you agree? It certainly feels that way sometimes. Why is it when you are trying to get to church there is a family blow-up argument? There are many “unexplained” barriers and roadblocks in our faith life and personal relationships. Have you ever considered that it might be a spiritual battle? Peter tells us “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”1 Peter 5: 8 Jesus called our enemy, “a murderer from the beginning…a liar and the father of lies.” John 8: 44. And in the passage we will look at this week, the Apostle Paul reminds us “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces in the heavenly realms” Ephesians 6: 12 Should we be afraid? ABSOLUTELY NOT! God, our great provider, has given us everything we need to stand against our enemy. The war has already been won! We have the spiritual armor we need to stand firm in our faith. Hope to see you Sunday so we can be encouraged together to “BE STRONG IN THE LORD”

Sermon Preview from Pastor Tom:
Finding True Wisdom

The Greek philosopher Socrates once said “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” His point is well-taken, as throughout the centuries people have had a propensity to “know” where to seek wisdom. And their search has taken them to all the wrong places.
In the days of King Solomon, those places were called the “high places.” These were high hills where people would construct pagan altars and make sacrifices to false gods. This, of course, was sheer idolatry - people putting something or someone else in the place that should be reserved for God. Whether we want to admit it or not, we all have “high places” in our own lives where our attention is drawn away from God and His wisdom.
Therefore, John Calvin has a better definition of wisdom than Socrates. Calvin says that “true and solid wisdom consists almost entirely of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves.”

Sunday August 11, 2024. Pastor Bill's last "Holy Day" as our lead pastor at Hope Church. We said "Farewell!" to Pastor Bill and Jill today, as they move on to the next stage of their life together, retirement! We heard Bill's last sermon, "In the Wilderness: Journey Under God's Blessing" and learned what it means to be blessed - to feel it and see it, that it is physical and spiritual, and that blessings come from God, and that we should share them with others!

From Numbers 6: 22-27.
‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”
God Bless You. Shalom. And Shalom.

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.

On August 11, in my final scheduled sermon, I want to end my preaching life at Hope the way I have ended about 700 worship services. Lesson 8, In the Wilderness: Live Under the Priestly Blessing, draws on the famous and memorable words of Numbers 6:22-27. I want to use these verses to offer you, to my dearly beloved sisters and brothers of Hope Church, ‘sending words’, encouraging you to know that you go forward with God’s blessings, knowing that God alone is capable of keeping you safe as you complete your long walk home.
I pray that you can join us in person so that I can personally greet and thank each of you who have been an amazing blessing to me and Jill these last 16 years, and so that we can together praise God for promising to be with us as we face ‘all of our tomorrows’.
The End. And the Beginning. Amen, Amen, Amen.

Numbers 26-28 (Selected Verses)

Sermon Preview from Pastor Bill:

Spoiler Alert! This blurb reveals important information about how Our Story ends.
In the final two installments of our summer sermon series, A Long Walk Home: In the Wilderness we learn how our collective journey ends. On August 4 we learn Lesson 7, based on portions of Numbers 26-28: the community which desires to cross into the Promised Land needs to be both obedient to God’s commands and also open to reforming its traditions according to God’s Word. In the Wilderness: Reform for Future Generations contains an historically significant moment in the life of God’s people which elevates women to a position of equality with men. This is such an important lesson for today’s church: God’s blessings are not limited by gender. How do we know this? God said so! This lesson also teaches us how to successfully transition to a new community leader and the importance of remembering God’s goodness at the Table. These three ‘reforms’ guide Hope Church as we continue our journey to the Promised Land.
On August 11, in my final scheduled sermon, I want to end my preaching life at Hope the way I have ended about 700 worship services. Lesson 8, In the Wilderness: Live Under the Priestly Blessing, draws on the famous and memorable words of Numbers 6:22-27. I pray that you can join us in person on one or both of these Sundays so that I can personally greet and thank each of you who have been an amazing blessing to me and Jill these last 16 years, and so that we can together praise God for promising to be with us as we face ‘all of our tomorrows’.
The End. And the Beginning. Amen, Amen, Amen.

2 Kings 4: 42-44; Matthew 6: 5-13

Sermon Preview from Pastor Tom:

Many of us are familiar with Jesus’ miracle of feeding a crowd of 5000 people on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. But do we remember that there is an Old Testament account of the prophet Elisha also calling upon a miracle to feed a multitude of people? As so often happens in Scripture, we find an Old Testament moment that both reveals the power of the one true God and points forward to reveal the loving nature of God through His Son, Jesus Christ.

We live in a ‘glass-half-empty’ world that needs to know this power and love of God! We all individually need regular reminders of who God is, and what He is doing in our lives and in His creation. Only then - through our hope in a God who sustains us in a fallen world full of problems - can we see the possibilities before us!

Numbers 16-20 (Selected Verses)

07/19/2024

Sermon Preview from Pastor Bill:
Why do leaders fail? Why do leaders fall? These are ‘when, not if’ questions. Since the beginning of God’s people their leaders have shown admirable traits which we can and should imitate. But “Leaders Fail and Fall” is also a truth revealed in the biblical story. On July 14, as we continued our journey, A Long Walk Home: In the Wilderness, we turned our attention to the hard lessons learned by Moses, Aaron and other leaders of Israel in Numbers 16-20. These painful but necessary lessons offer today’s leaders of the church a practical course in principles of God-based leadership. But these are also important lessons for the congregation. No one can be a leader unless there are people who follow the leader. And a congregation needs leaders they can trust, or they will not follow. But the people need to understand that their leaders need grace as well, for they will surely fail and fall. How do we help them succeed and get back up when that happens?
On July 21, our worship considers two stories that surprise us. “Expect to be Surprised by Hope” ponders the healing story of the bronze snake. This early prophecy of the role of Jesus being high and lifted up gives us hope that in our times of distress and despair God provides a community unexpected sources of healing and unity. Numbers 21-25 also tells one of the most fantastic stories of the entire Bible. When Balaam’s donkey talks back to him it results in his eyes being opened to the presence of God’s guardian angel sent to protect Balaam and God’s people from the enemy. This story offers a most surprising plot twist that should give us hope that when our way in life seems blocked, do not despair! God may be the one doing the ‘blocking’ for our own good! You should always expect to be surprised by hope during worship at Hope Church, but this message will give you a measure of joyful hope to carry you through your summer!
It is a long walk home to glory, but these lessons give us hope that our time in the wilderness parts of life are not wasted. These are lessons that give us direction, hope and life! See you in church!

Sermon Preview from Pastor Tom:
What do you think of large crowds? For some of us, a crowd of people is something to be avoided because it brings discomfort. For others, a crowd brings a sense of excitement and anticipation. Either way, a large gathering of people certainly attracts our attention.
In this week’s Scripture lesson from 2 Samuel chapter five, we see a very large crowd around King David. This particular group of people have not always been supportive of David, and many have been downright antagonistic toward him. But now, they realize that they desperately need him.
Like it or not, we may find ourselves part of this same crowd in our own relationship with Jesus Christ - and we will see that God’s faithfulness always prevails!

Sunday June 30, 2024. Sermon: "In the Wilderness: Trust Faith-Filled Explorers." We learned about gettin' on the train for glory as we wrapped up our VBS and heard the kids share their learned messages in song. We celebrated Amanda's 12 years of service to Hope as our Children and Youth Leader and wished her the best as she discerns God's next call on her life! (She remains our pastoral assistant.) We also celebrated Pastor Bill's 70th birthday with cake!

Sermon Preview from Pastor Bill:
What if there are wild animals or robbers on the train tracks? If you were preparing for a special long distance train ride, other than that one around the Milwaukee Zoo, what is your worst fear? Probably nothing too serious, right? But what if some experienced riders told you that the train ride would be filled with unknown and hidden dangers? And then other experienced riders told you the trip is an adventure, for sure, but the destination makes it well worth it. Who would you believe? The people you trusted most; I assume. Would fear or hope win out in your decision making about getting aboard the train for your special trip? In keeping with our VBS theme, this Sunday’s sermon will transfer the lessons from the wilderness found in Numbers 13-14, to a passenger deciding whether to board a train, a special train bound for glory! Trust Faith-Filled Explorers takes the stories of the scouts who explored the Promised Land, and the reception of their good and bad reports by the people of Israel and applies them to our journey aboard the Glory Express. All aboard? It depends on who you listen to, who you trust, God’s messengers of hope or human messengers of fear. The train is ready to depart. Are you on it?

Third night of Rocky Railway VBS at Hope Church. We learned that Jesus' power gives us HOPE. "So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord!" Psalm 31:24. Walked to the beach for some creative "train town" time. Great final night at the Railway! See you Sunday 10 a.m. - the kids will be singing and we'll see a power point of pictures from the week!
