Still warm, but it is supposed to cool off later today. The unexpected warm spell did hurry the lavender along, particularly the Melissa. This pinkish/white English lavender is one of the best culinary lavenders. It is approaching "bloom" stage when we stop cutting for bundles and cut for making oil. It also makes a fine bouquet, by itself and when paired with Munstead or Folgate. Again, both excellent culinary and crafting lavenders. We have these bouquets for $20 (it includes the metal vase), or by the bundle at $5 each or five for $20. River Road Flower Farm at 1364 River Road in Sequim from 10 until 8 every day (but closed on Mondays for farm chores).

Today reminds me of almost every summer day in the Midwest. Overall, it's a fine day, but kind of warm. Nonetheless, we still cut some lavender. The heat is telling the plants to bloom. Folgate and Melissa English Lavender; both are excellent in the kitchen. Fresh cut bundles are $5 or Five for $20.

So here we are cutting lavender a week or two early. And we aren't even through planting dahlias. We have our lavender oil in the farm-stand over the weekend. And we will be there to chat with you and talk about lavender and dahlias.
The self serve Farm-Stand is open every day (except Monday, when we close for farm chores) from 10 until 8. 1364 River Road in Sequim.

So today we are in farm-stand mode. Plenty of lavender bundles - Folgate and Melissa English Lavenders. The Pink Melissa is a nice mellow bloom, visually and the fragrance also. It makes a superior Distilled Essential Oil. Carol has some samples available today and some bargains on oil.
And it is family day here. Our daughter, Patty, is a better lavender cutter than I am. And our son, Luke, is in the new dahlia field digging holes for the pots of dahlias for the cut flower field - 525 holes to be exact. Many new varieties.

We started early this morning to get the farmstand ready for our first cut of the season. We are cutting both Folgate and Melissa Lavender. Folgate is a classic English Lavender and Melissa is a pinkish white lavender with strong stems and a firm bloom that makes excellent oil. These are fine culinary lavenders and an excellent crafting lavender. Prices for Folgate are $5 a bundle or 6 for $20. And we have vases with Folgate or Melussa for $20 (with the vase). On Saturday we will feature lavender oil distilled from Melissa. This is our best oil.
From 10 until dusk every day but closed on Monday for farm chores. Oh, and the dahlias are coming along nicely, but not ready yet. 1364 River Road in Sequim.

I was raking straw in the dahlia field when Carol came up looking for an extra hand. We don't grow garlic to sell, though I suppose we could. This is the last of the scapes, headed for pickles and pesto.
By the way, we are planning on having the farm-stand open this weekend for a fine culinary lavender and lavender oil thats suited for culinary use.

We are in the habit of saying "Tempus Fugit" around here. Time Flies! So this row of Folgate English Lavender is almost ready to cut. What is weird is that the row next to it is the very same variety. It may be that the outside row had more water last season being next to other flowers. Another thing we say is "QuiƩn Sabe". Who Knows? But I think we will be cutting this row in a week. We will have great prices for fresh cut bundles at the farm stand. It is a great variety for crafting or culinary use. The pink/white Melissa English Lavender is coming along nicely also. It is a very decent mild lavender that makes a superior oil. We are likely to have the farm stand ready next weekend.

Our latest fawn is busy moving around with mom. They know they aren't supposed to be in the dahlia field and they scooted away when I drove in. We have a handful of dahlias blooming in the greenhouse. Nice to see some color. And our earliest lavender is getting close. Not this weekend, but maybe next.

The dahlias in the cut flower field are well on their way. It won't be too long. This fawn thought the edge of the field was a perfect place to spend the afternoon.

We have been busy here on the farm. The greenhouse work is about done. New dahlias are all growing in pots, destined for the field or spending the summer in the pot for next season's pot tubers. The early dahlias for cut flowers are out of the ground and many a foot high. We rebuilt our irrigation system and pulled new lines for the lavender. And the lavender is looking pretty good, but still a few weeks before it's ready.
