One of the things that weigh heaviest on me is watching all the fellow small business owners that I know clinging on by their fingertips to their babies. They have worked diligently for years to build a viable business and now are faced with the very real possibility that they will have to close their doors for good.
I know that life is not fair and I am not of the mind that everything can or will always work out in the end, BUT you can make a difference. This difference doesn't have to cost you a lot or even any money just a little bit of time, AND I bet you will sleep better knowing you helped where you could.
I am well aware that we can't always support local and that there are many valid reasons that you don't. Maybe you don't need or use that product or service, maybe it is out of your budget, or maybe they don't ship/deliver and you can't get there.
BUT - There are many ways to show support.
- MOST important is to genuinely refer them. Notice the genuinely. I can almost always tell when someone is blowing smoke and that does not help a business it makes it look like a paid advertisement. That means if you don't know their product or service please don't act like you do because it takes away from their credibility.
- If you have a problem with a business please try and contact the owner personally rather than bash them on social media or in a review. We all check out social media and reviews before we purchase now and your comments WILL change the minds of many that are willing to try a new product. AND many, many times what we consider a major issue turns out to be a misunderstanding, BUT once you post that comment it can't be stricken from the minds of those that have read it and most likely shared it.
- Share their posts, websites, links, etc. on your social media and *Gasp* to the friends you still talk to on the phone. Your endorsement goes a long way with those that trust you.
- If you use a product that is available locally please try to use them as a source.
- Purchase a commercial product from a local store owner instead of a large chain.
- Give their product or service as a gift to someone that does need or use it.
- Support other small businesses that support small businesses such as small shops/convenience stores, restaurants, coffee houses, farm stands, etc. These small businesses are many times the bread and butter for other small businesses that supply them through wholesale accounts.

Who would have thought that when I started D's almost 13 years ago that my products would be in great local stores and eateries in Mass, Rhode Island and even Maine!
Today's delivery was comprised of 90 dozen cookies and 11 dozen brownies/bars! It's totally amazing to me that my dream of offering treats with locally sourced and high quality real ingredients has come this far.
My heartfelt thanks to my unbelievable supportive customers, my awesome girls that never fail me in the kitchen, the fantastic local businesses that carry my products, my local suppliers and a special thanks the consumers that purchase one of my treats from those local businesses. You can feel good knowing that your purchase not only sweetens your day, but also enables me to offer a decent wage, use and support local suppliers (everything from eggs to labels), and offer donations to non profit organizations.
