This structure is a classic example of "diamond in the rough" not only brought back to life, but elevated to be "a gem" on this busy road. We even received a call from an abutter last week, complimenting our team on the quality of our work and his relief that the building would now be an asset to the area.
Highlights of this project include: All new roof, all new composite trim (painted to match the composite siding), all new (much larger) Anderson composite windows to provide us with much more natural light inside and the modern look we were looking for, including exterior LED lighting under all the soffits for a beautiful look at night (see pictures).

Here is a project we are just starting in Swansea. Swansea allows for (up to) a 1,000 square foot "accessory apartment" addition to an existing home. This one is 993 square feet, with 9' ceilings and a cathedral ceiling in the main living area, where the kitchen, family room and dining areas are.
This is the 2nd project we have done like this and we are actively discussing/planning a 3rd project in Somerset for another client.
The "in-law" apartment (name most people refer to it by) can be a tremendous benefit to both the property owner and the family member(s) who will live in the new addition.
Here are just a few benefits to consider:
1). It brings mom/dad (or other family members) to your home, but allows each family to have their own dedicated space and privacy.
2). For the cost of building this addition (on average $230 - $300 per square foot), where else could mom/dad find a new 1,000 square foot home, that is new construction for that price?
3). In some communities the property owner can rent this space to any party, as long as the property owner lives on the premises, further widening the potential uses of the addition.
4). Mom and dad get a brand new home, with all the latest building technology and efficiencies, without having to own or manage land, and pay properties taxes. The property will certainly have a higher assessed value in the future with the addition in place, but it is likely that difference in property taxes will be less than if this addition was on its own lot, as a single-family residence, further saving mom and dad on recurring expenses for their home.
5). This model allows for both families to combine financial resources to make this possible.
In cases where two families desire to live together and with proper planning for both families in the design of the addition, I often tell clients this is a "home run" for both families.
