Something new from the last kiln

Will be atJuliard Park in Santa Rosa today from 11 to 5 in California today celebrating all things Japanese!

This iron saturate yellow glaze is by far our most persnickety glaze. It’s extremely reactive to temperature and atmosphere and has a very small window within which it performs . When it’s good it looks good and when it’s bad, it looks horrible….. here’s a bowl with the glaze turned out just perfect.

given my fundamental inability to draw carve paint or otherwise, decorate the surface of a pot, I think I’ve always just relied on the shape to tell the story.

It’s one thing to make the pots and it’s another thing to choose their forever clothes. I posted this one earlier before it had been fired and was still just clay. I had a hard time deciding what to glaze it, but I’m actually really glad that I glazed it as I did. The shininess does interesting things to the curves and I think it really allows the shape to come through.

Well, I think maybe my life stream was a fail, ( sorry, I tried…😞) but the kiln certainly was not. It was an excellent firing at about 85 people joined us as we unloaded it piece by piece. I am full of gratitude for the beautiful weather, excellent food, the incredible customers, and our most awesome sales! How do two potters get so lucky?!
