Before becoming one of Rome’s most powerful leaders, Julius Caesar experienced a shocking encounter with pirates. Around 75 BCE, while sailing across the Aegean Sea, Caesar was captured by Cilician pirates who demanded a ransom for his release. Instead of acting afraid, Caesar reportedly joked with them, demanded they raise his ransom because he believed he was worth more, and even threatened to return and punish them. After his release, he gathered a small naval force, tracked the pirates down, captured them, and had them executed. The story became one of the earliest examples of Caesar’s fearless confidence and ambition.
