Long before distortion became standard in rock music, The Sonics were creating a rough, high-volume sound in Tacoma that felt closer to pure impact than careful studio craft. Formed in the early 1960s around vocalist Gerry Roslie and the Parypa brothers, the band turned simple structures into something tense, loud and unpredictable, helping shape the foundation of garage rock years before the genre had a name.

“Have Love Will Travel” moves with a relentless pulse, powered by sharp guitar stabs, pounding drums and a vocal delivery that sounds raw without falling apart. There’s very little decoration in the arrangement, which gives the track its direct, physical energy.

“Strychnine” pushes even further into abrasive territory. The distorted saxophone, heavy backbeat and almost reckless pacing create a sense of controlled chaos that became one of the group’s trademarks. Even by mid-1960s standards, the recording sounded aggressive and unusually hard-edged.
