Earlier this week, these women sat together ahead of their scheduled surgeries during our ongoing fistula camp at St. Francis Hospital Buluba.

Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day alongside them and the many others now beginning their post-operative recovery.

While surgery is a critical step, recovery does not end at discharge. Many women return home to situations where rest and recovery are not possible, increasing the risk of complications and repeat treatment.

Through our reintegration program, we provide short-term, practical support to help women recover safely and rebuild their lives following surgery.

As this camp continues, we are working to identify up to 10 women most at risk following surgery.

Women like Hadija began arriving on Monday for screening ahead of our surgical camp at St. Francis Buluba Hospital.

For many, reaching the health centre is a significant first step in their journey towards a fistula-free future.

Our goal is to ensure that every woman who attends leaves with a clearer path forward.

In the first months of the year, Uganda Village Project continued working across Uganda to strengthen access to reproductive health services and support women affected by obstetric fistula.

We hosted two surgical camps and carried out additional training with our fistula ambassadors both in Iganga and Kiryandongo — strengthening community-based awareness, referral, and follow-up.

With the start of the new academic year in Uganda, we also resumed our adolescent reproductive health education in schools and communities, onboarding two new partner schools and continuing with 8 schools that joined the program in 2025.

Hospital discharge day is always a reason to celebrate!

After surgery and recovery, women return home free from the constant leaking and stigma caused by childbirth injuries such as obstetric fistula and severe perineal tears.

For many, this marks the beginning of the next stage of healing — rebuilding confidence, reconnecting with family and community, and returning to daily life.

However, our work does not end at discharge. We remain in contact with each patient and conduct follow-up visits to ensure recovery is progressing as expected.

Learning works best when students participate.

During our adolescent reproductive health secondary school sessions, students are encouraged to engage with the topics at hand. They actively participate through asking questions, sharing ideas, and demonstrating what they have learned.

These conversations help build confidence and ensure that accurate health information spreads far beyond the classroom.

Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools young people can have.

During this session at St. James High School, UVP Program Manager Harriet leads students through discussions on reproductive health, helping them understand their bodies, their choices, and where to seek care when they need it.

When adolescents have accurate information, they are better equipped to protect their health and their futures.

Our recent surgical camp at Kiryandongo Hospital treated a number of women suffering childbirth-related injuries including fistula, that have left them living with incontinence and isolation.

Many had been suffering for years before learning that treatment was available. Through community outreach and our growing network of trained fistula ambassadors, women are able to reach hospitals where specialized surgical teams can provide care.

For each woman sat here awaiting her turn in theatre, this moment represents the possibility of healing and returning home with dignity.

These eight women are just a few of the 30 patients treated at Uganda Village Project's fistula repair camp at Busolwe General Hospital in February with support from our partner, the Fistula Foundation . Today, they're going home healed, dignified, and back to their families.

Obstetric fistula and severe birth injuries are preventable. They are treatable. And no woman should face them alone.
