People always ask me, “Of all the songs you’ve written or co-written, which one is your favorite?” It’s a tough one. Every song belongs to a specific moment—written for a reason, a person, an event… or sometimes just to meet a deadline or fill out a B-side. And yet, any of those circumstances can lead to that rare feeling of, “I love this song.”
This one holds a little bit of all of that.
It’s special because of where I was and who I wrote it with. It came out of a deeply personal album project, and both the lyric and the music still move me. I don’t perform it often, but when I do, it always connects—someone inevitably tells me it’s their favorite, or that it spoke directly to them. That’s the hope with every song.
But this one has another layer.
An artist I admire, who happened to live nearby, heard it and came to me with a vision for a video. We barely knew each other, but his passion was undeniable—I was immediately in. It became a true collaboration, though he led the charge: writing, storyboarding, directing, choosing locations, and ultimately shaping the final cut.
We shot it in our home, on my piano, in our neighborhood subway station, and on the A train—something of a rite of passage for any New York musician.
I think the video captures the song beautifully—the love, the loss, the resilience woven through it.
Directed and shot in NYC’s West Village by .
Written in Sydney, Australia by me and NLJ.
One of my favorites.

I hope you enjoy it—comments welcome.

People always ask me “Of all the songs you’ve written and co-written, which one is your favorite?” Such a difficult question to answer because each song is written at a different yet specific time in your life, and many of them are written for special or unique reasons, sometimes a song is inspired by a certain person or event, and other times you’re just cranking one out to meet a quota or need for a “B side” to an album or recording project. Each one of these scenarios can produce different outcomes which you as the writer can connect with and have an “I love this song!” moment. How you perform it, how you feel when you perform it and how your fans and friends respond to it, can also have an effect on your feelings of favoritism.
(So basically all my songs are my favorites:-))
This song has a little bit of all the above in it. It’s special because of where I was and who I wrote it with, it was written as part of an album project that has a deeply personal story line and it’s a moving song to me lyrically and musically. I really enjoy performing it even though I rarely have the opportunity, and it always moves someone in an audience to tell me that it’s their favorite or that it spoke directly to them, which is what a songwriter hopes of every song they write.
But this song is special and a “favorite” to me for another reason as well.
Another talented artist and musician whose work I admire and who happened to live very close to me, enjoyed the song so much that he came to me with an idea for a video. We didn’t know each other well, but his inspiration for the project was so strong and palpable, I was easily captivated and drawn in to wanting to work with him. It was a collaboration but he took the lead, writing, story boarding, directing, choosing locations, scheduling and ultimately shooting the final cut. I am very grateful and can’t thank him enough for the finished project.
It was shot in my home, on my piano, in our neighborhood subway station, and on the A train—something of an iconic rite of passage for any musician who takes it.
I think the video is perfect for the song and showcases the feelings of love, loss and determination and strength that lyrics and music convey.
Written by myself and NLJ in Sydney, Australia. Directed and shot in NYC’s West Village by Mike Higbee, this is, one of, my favorite songs of mine.
I hope you enjoy it.

Outstanding performance by .barbara last evening. She hands down is my new favorite conductor. You are filled with joy and enraptured in the music watching her conduct. And this outstanding tour de force stuns you to the core when she adds her vocal prowess to the mix. You’ve got to see it to believe it. You have one more chance to experience her magic. Tonight at Don’t Miss it. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/24/arts/music/barbara-hannigan-la-voix-humaine-philharmonic-review.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

Thank you, London 🇬🇧, for such a warm reception. Grateful to The Crazy Coqs for welcoming me back to their wonderful stage, to everyone who came out in support of live music—old friends and new—and to Sonny Waheed of The Reviews Hub for shining a much-needed light on the different interpretations and influences that exist within the cabaret genre.
Very Much appreciated.
David Raleigh: Setting the Standard – Crazy Coqs, London - The Reviews Hub There’s something rather special about witnessing an artist reclaim their voice after a health crisis. When that voice belongs to David Raleigh, a musician of considerable accomplishment, and the setting is the intimate environs of Crazy Coqs, the effect is nothing short of transformative. Raleigh...

Mom,
Ten years ago this morning, you left me to be with the only true love I ever knew you to have.
I know you are free now—from pain, from loneliness—and at complete peace in His presence.
I love you, and I’m happy for you. Thank you for my life, for your prayers, and for the unconditional love you gave me so freely, every single day.
It’s very special that this anniversary falls on Easter. You loved this holiday. It encompassed everything you so firmly believed in.
(And I loved it because every year you’d buy me a new suit! 😊)
I miss you every day. And yes, I selfishly hope that you miss me too—but as one of your favorite songs says, “the things of earth will grow strangely dim.”
So continue to rest easy Mom, in the light of His glory and grace.

On our very first visit to Scotland Rick and I were honored to board and enjoy living with and his flight crew mates.
Based on the much loved 90’s BBC Scotland cult comedy series and starring original cast members, Alan Cu***ng. Forbes Mason, Siobhan Redmond and Patrick Ryecart, , with story, script and lyrics by Alan Cu***ng and Forbes Mason, along with Johnny McKnight, and music by Forbes Mason and Alan Cu***ng, is a wickedly funny musical touring Scotland to “sold out” theatres through May.
We were fortunate to see it in previews and “oh dearie me!” I think they have a hit on their hands!
Alan of course steals the show and is incredible reprising his role. As Sebastian Flight.
And the rumors of the beauty of Scotland are true. Although I neglected to get any photos of the lush green countryside.
I was too busy enjoying the flight!
Lovely to share the night with and their neice Celia.
