As entrepreneurs and business owners we are always growing and learning. Many of us have essentially created our own job and then taught ourself how to do this job. This is highly empowering, yet can be overwhelming at times.

For many owners, bookkeeping and sifting through all the financial details and planning can be just one more thing they have to learn but don't really want to. I have walked on the peaks and in the valleys with many clients over the last several years, and am happy to lend a hand!

Purchased this ring earlier in the summer to remind myself and my clients that elephants are strong, and they are best eaten one bite at a time!

An accounting colleague and I were discussing how many leads we come across for bookkeeping where the owner is looking for someone who can do both bookkeeping AND social media marketing. Or, bookkeeping AND misc. admin or mailing lists.

I get it, an admin person is an admin person. Or are they?

I say no. When you look for someone (*cough* like me) who only does bookkeeping or business management, you get an expert who knows how to get through your financial processes efficiently.

And, I know where to look - what reports to run, how to explain them, where the errors are - if you wonder where all the cash went each month, exactly how much money your company is making, if bills are getting paid on time, if clients are being invoiced and paying on time, etc.

Same principle with managing advertising or mailers or answering the phone and other admin tasks. They are better at what they do because they do it all day every day, and they're good at it!

Multi-purpose employees seem like a good idea at first, but as business owners, we understand that ya can't be good at
everything. Neither is your help.

It can also be far more efficient financially to hire two separate contractors rather than one who is just OK. They may take more time to complete tasks or be ineffective at seeing the bigger financial picture.

Come check out my profile in the Digital Bookkeepers Association directory! The DBA is a fairly new organization - movement, really, dedicated to screening, educating, and supporting experienced bookkeeping professionals.

One of the problems with independent bookkeepers is that there are a lot of bad ones who really don't know what they're doing. The DBA has a rigorous certification course based on experience and actual accounting knowledge which piggybacks on another very detailed certification program called Bookkeepers Business Launch.

I finished BBL 2 years ago, and am now working through the DBA certification.

Finally got around to getting a page together for the financial services and bookkeeping business I started 2 years ago!

It's been an amazing ride, and part of my procrastination has been due to a full client load. A good problem to have, I feel blessed!
